    I wonder if they're authentic. They're not cancelled. Then again, do they require to be cancelled since they weren't used for circulating coins?

    D2 is the type of steel not the hardness. D2 is mainly used for dies.

    Kern has a set of uncanceled 1927 SA Proof sov dies for sale - complete with collar. They aint quite so cheap as these - $37k image

    Medallic dies aren't "required" to be destroyed or canceled, but with limited-edition art medals (usually numbered), they typically are.
