Crackout and my first ANACS experience

I took a 1915 $2.50 gold coin out of an NGC MS61 holder and sent it to ANACS to see if I could get a little bump... It came back AU55 image

I think if ngc doesnt step it up soon, they will be drop below anacs. All my anacs coins are very conservatively graded.

"Crackin out" may soon not be all it's "cracked" up to be.

I got an email a couple weeks ago from a dealer with a REALLY nice lot of REALLY early bust dollars in PCGS slabs. He was .....sure..... there was a point or two that had been overlooked.

Guess there was. Seven came back in bodybags. Everything from repair to tooling.

    He is a bit livid.

Be happy with what you have.

Also, re: ANACS, I am very happy with their grading AND I like the size of their slabs.
A year or so ago, I sent 58 of my bulk twenties to them on a "gold $9 special" These were raw bulk 20's.
    They were very conservative.

sorry to say this, but cracking a coin out of 1 piece o' plastic to submit to another plastic co is pretty stupid.

not saying YOUR stupid, but what you DID IS.

why not just be happy w/ the coin for what IT IS???

I think most people here have cracked out a coin for one reason or another. I don't do it as much as I used to, but I'm sure I will again. Just call me stupid!

How old was the NGC slab?

I've been saying for some time that ANACS is a very underrated grading service.

The ones I have sent I did not crack out, sent them in the slab they were in and have had great results that way. All have crossed at a bump or came back the same grade as the other TPG said it was.

I have only in the last 6 months submitted any of my old-time personal collection coins to PCGS in association with the April Las Vegas Invitational. I was extremely pleased with the results, and was fortunate to get the solid grades on some key coins.

I am preparing to send in another batch or two of coins (Prooflike & DMPL CC Morgans & $20 Gold Libs & Saints) which I have selected from my collection as high-potential coins. Some of them are dates that will add to my Morgan Dollar Registry Set. I feel that "making" some certified coins out of my raw colelction coins is a cost-effective way to continue to build up my Registry Set -- especially with the Economy Grade Service Level.

Third party grading services are not perfect, but I feel that they do help level the playing field between collectors and dealers, and play a key role in authenticating coins to help weed out the counterfeits.

I must admit that I have derived great satisfaction in seeing some of my favorite coins get very high PCGS grades which helps to validate my initial selection criteria of them as very high grade mint state coins. It's also nice to know that you own one of the top 50 or so condition census coins for a specific date.

This1885-CC ANACS MS-64 DMPL may also support your thesis that ANACS can sometimes be very conservative at grading image

I have to chime in my satisfaction w/ ANACS, based on limited experience. Two coins, really. First -- an ANACS AU55 $2.5 gold that looks as good as anybody's 58, and came to me for 50 money since lots of folks don't trust their slabs. The other -- that stupid quarter I stupidly bought from that stupid guy in last week's stupid epic post. For the net price of a "normal" submission to PCGS, these guys graded it in TWO DAYS with FAX notification, and gave me some extra personal handholding by phone along the way. There were real people instantly reachable there who were instantly helpful & remembered me on my second call from talking with me the first time. And anyway what I needed was slabbing w/ problem notation & net grade anyway, so they were my best option besides.

So -- if I'm in a spot where I need to slab some stuff for resale and the issues aren't ones with a big one-point price jump, or if I'm ever again (I hope not) in need of verification that a coin really does have problems, I will probably use them.

  • There are some good bargains in ANACS holders, if you take the time to hunt for undergraded coins. As with any service, there are overgraded examples as well. Overall, I think that ANACS is a good service.

  • I can't complain too much. The 1898-S Double Eagle that I sent in went from 62 to 63.

ANACS is a great TPG, but I HATE those little slabs.

  • No No This can't be happening. First a thread that proved "NGC is always overgraded vs PCGS" was a bunch of bull. NOW we have one that shows that ANACS is not the overgrading Jack*** that the forum said they were.

Crap, now all my secrets are starting to be revealed, looks like it might become harder to find ANACS and NGC coins to upgrade at PCGS.

Stuart...I have to say that carson city is rather sexy! Either you slabbed a great coin, or payed 64dmpl price and got a great bargin! Looks like an easy 65+ Are you going to try and cross it?

Gold graded au/58-ms/62 is the biggest crapshoot in third party grading.

You could submit that coin 5 times and get different results 5 different times.

I wouldn't be shocked, or surprised by this, AT ALL.

As for ANACS, they do ok. Just not quite as consistent on a slab to slab basis iwth most coins.

It's going to PCGS next (so I can throw away more money). I bet it comes back in a body bag or AU58.

  • I agree with you BigD5! Lets dont get carried away here! If I am keeping my coins until I pass on, I dont care what holder they are in. If I am going to be a seller of my coins anytime before I go, I want my coins in PCGS holders. What anyone else does with their coins are of course their business! image

I think ANACS grades very conservative on a lot of their slabs. I don't think I see many overgraded ANACS coins.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

So do I send it back cause it's ANACS??

    I think not.

I too agree, I believe their grading is very well. Love the holders too. I just don't think they're popular enough or as well known. Maybe if they had a set registery? Or jacked up prices? Something like that might work.
