Any ideas as to what caused this?

Found this in going through my sparkletts bottle hoard. Poor guy is pretty beat-up but is still a curiosity. Given that both the obverse and reverse rims are rolled inward would tend to rule out a kid with a hammer pounding on this.

  • Someone tapped on the rim to make a coin ring and then gave up?
Someone placed end of a pipe on the coin and smashed down?

No that's exactly what it is. If you tap on the edge of the coin and keep tapping the edge speads and then in this case has been peened over on both sides. Just a mutilated coin.
