While at a coin and jewelry shop at around its closing time today I snooped through a few proof sets. A 1964 set in a tattered and torn mint envelope contained a 1964 half that looks just like the two accented hairs that Russ pulled out of two sets (which came back slabbed as PF68DCAM's). Even through the cello the half screams DCAM. The coin guy had left early, so the jewelry guy set the set aside for me. I will pick it up tomorrow. What a nice way to end the day.

BTW, only one went 68DCAM, the other went 65DCAM due to hairlines.

You have a lot more willpower than I do. I'd have had them open before I pulled out of the parking lot!

<< <i>How often are AHs found? Is it known what percentage of proof sets contain AHs? >>
Of the sets still around today, perhaps 2% to 3%.

Sorry for a dumb question, but what would an average grade be for a Kennedy (non-AH) fresh out of a proof set? It seems the me that the individual coins are worth more than the set intact if you can get a half decent half. Is this reasonable thinking?
Thanks,
Rob

BUST THOSE ENVELOPES OPEN!!!!
<< <i>I went to my local coin shop a couple of weeks ago to look for some AH Kennedys too. I asked to see his 64 proofs. He brought out 1, no AH no envelope, and 8 of these, all unopened. He asks me if I'm looking for double dies or something---I say yeah, something like that---his advice---don't open them!!! I haven't yet, but it's killing me. And yes, I bought all of them. >>
I went to a new shop for the fist time the other day and asked to look at his 64 proofs. Said I couldn't look through them because it would take up to much time and others have done it before. He said he would sell me one for $11. I didnt even get to choose which set I wanted since he would only let me look at 1. I went ahead and bought it. It wasn't an AH, but I won't be visiting his shop again.
How many other businesses thrive by refusing to allow customers (the ones with the money) view the inventory?
Let's see...car dealers? Nope. Can you imagine?..."We will only let you drive one car....the green one"
How about....jewelery stores? Nope. Can you imagine?..."Reach into the box...whichever ring you pull out will be your engagement ring! And no we don't resize!"
How about...Grocery stores? Nope. Can you imagine?..."You'll buy this apple, or no apple, so there!"
How about...video stores? Nope. Can you imagine?..."Yes, we have lots of DVDs...I will go pick one out for you"
