Opinions on this 90 cc Morgan

Just got this back from PCGS bagged for "altered surface". This one is beyond me. It came out of a ANACS MS61 DMPL slab. This is the stuff that ticks me off big time about PCGS. Opinions?

This is a tough call. It may have been thumbed... I am not able to make the best determination from the photos... the photos are good, I would just rather see the coin when it comes to the issue of altered surfaces. It is a nice coin and I may be wrong about the thumbing.

I'd say it was properly graded as a 90-CC.

Just for a sec think about the Grade it was in the ANACS slab, MS61 DMPL. Now look at the surface marks rim knicks etc...
In order for it to be a 61 there should be Many visible hits and or contact marks in Prime Focal areas. It is hard to judge from a pic but I don't see any of the aformentioned causes to warrent the 61 grade. There is a Reason that ANACS gave the 61 is due to the Altered Surfaces that they detected. They have the option to either Down grade the coin or Mark it as Cleaned and Net Grade it. They simply chose to Downgrade it. JMHO.

I like the coin and agree with BAJJERFAN on the grade. Might want to see if you can slab it across the st. Good luck!

I think its a strong 61 dmpl...anacs, are normally pretty strict with their morgans.

Interesting thoughts Scott, but I just don't see that. I think they would net grade it in a second if they (ANACS) saw altered surfaces. I would just like to see PCGS clarify their body bags better then to just reject this for altered surfaces (this time---next time????) and mail it back.

I've never successfully crossed a PL at PCGS. All five I have sent in have either come back without the designation, or altered surfaces. I would try NGC on this one.

Thanks for the experience and advice Eric, I may do just that.

I think that the coin looks every point of 63. I did, however, send my best raw Morgan to PCGS hoping for 65. It came back as BB for altered surfaces. I am unable to see the alteration. I look at that coin every time I go there, and can't figure it out. He is asking very, very, strong MS64 money for it, so it doesn't surprize me that the coin that PCGs BB'd hasn't sold.

    Looks great to me.

Do you think its artifically frosted?
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

  • Hi,
it does look a bit funny IMHO - very hard to tell from the scans. Even harder to tell thumbing though the b/w photo did help. It could be.

It really doesn't look artificially touched in any way to me, and as for possible thumbing-I really don't think so looking at the coin in hand. This one was a bad call by PCGS in my opinion. It is like pulling teeth sometimes.
