1950 Pfennig date variety

Large and small dates on the W. German 1950 D 1 pfennig coin.
Does anyone know if this has been documented before or if there are other similar German varieties?
image
I scanned the coins side by side then moved the sections of dates together so they are the actual comparitive sizes.
Other details are slightly different as well like the curved or straight oak sprig stem.

Unfortunately, I've never collected the BRD coinage, so I'm not familiar with their die varieties. I vaguely seem to recall having heard about this a few years ago, but my tired, old brain can't seem to dredge it up. image

I have heard of the die varieties on the 1950 coinage but never actually seen the difference until now. So thank you for that! It's not so strange in my opinion that small varieties would occur given the fact that hundreds of millions of coins were minted in several different mints for the year 1950.

Thanks guys! I don't actively go looking for varieties or errors but if I run across one unexpectedly I find them extremely interesting! Just like the recent IOM silver coin mystery.
I hope if someone runs across more info on this subject that they'll keep this thread in mind as I'd like to learn more about how widespread these German varieties may be. You'd think Krause would have at least put the 'Varieties Exist' note under the listings. Is there a German reference that makes note of them?

I found a little more info Alex Kuznetsov's 'Coin Temple' site where he lists/shows quite a few more German, and other countries' varieties. That is a site worth visiting for sure!

I've heard of and seen large and small mintmark varieties on 1950 coinage, but not dates. Interesting.

    Hello Brad!

Wow I´m really surprised about that what you wrote and the link to "Coin Temple".
I live in Germany and have collected coins long time, but have not heard about that before!?
My german coin catalog did not say anythink about this.
I have seen on the "new" mint "A" Berlin since 1990, that the coins looks a little bit different than from the other 4 mints in Germany.
But also about this I have never read anythink about!
Ok on the other side all 1950 coins are the first new german coins and they were made in a very high mintage,
I´m sure they have used many different stamps(?) to made them.
The 1, 5, 10, 50 Pfennig are made in the highest mintage in 1950!

Hello everyone! Long time no see.

Brad, thank you for your letter. As I see it, this variety is not actually listed on my webpage since I have only found one date style for 1950-dated coins - must be identical to the left coin on your picture.

Askari - Ahem... the link has always been in my signature line image

I must admit, however, that I haven't updated the webpage (aside from the doubles list) for a long time already. This summer is rather slow, coin-wise. I haven't visited the coin club as often as I used to since there aren't as many good sellers present, and there are very few new coins appearing on the market. I hope it'll get better in the autumn, as it usually does.

And by the way, I have actually discontinued collecting most date varieties, which made my collection thinner by some 137 coins, a lot of BRD coins among those. Therefore I don't think I will post or update any more detailed descriptions of date varieties on my webpage - however, other kinds of varieties will be posted and described... someday image

One more thing about those date varieties: as I was dismissing them from my collection, I recorded those that are not published on my webpage. If anyone is interested, I can post the resulting document right here - might be useful to those looking for date varieties on world coinage.

    Take care you all image

Good to see you here again Alex! Don't be a stranger!
I'd be interested in seeing the document on the other varieties not on the web site.
How did you dispose of your varieties? I would have made you a deal on them.

I put the varieties into my doubles list; some are already gone, others are still waiting for a trade. I would gladly trade them with you, but I've already tried to send coins to the US twice, the first time they were returned to me, the second time they got lost. Both times the coins were sent by registered airmail and were hidden inside the envelope. I'm reluctant to risk any more coins that way and for the moment I don't see any other opportunity to deliver them to you.

Here are the varieties, listed by country. I hope it's comprehensive enough.

I'm just wondering, which die variety looks closer to the 1948 and 1949 pfennig?
