Are coin collectors crass, boorish, primitive, Philistines?

Here we are. Supposedly appreciateurs of great beauty. And what do we collect? Coins!

Mass produced in the extreme, units of exchange for the more avant garde, clinky clanky little bits of metal either worn or unworn from their intended purpose.

When we COULD be buying PAINTINGS.

Colorful, beautiful, masterful .....paintings!

Or SCULPTURE. Individually carved precise representations of nature graved from stone.

WE......wax superlative over strike. Luster. Color. How many made it this far.

When we COULD have a Velasquez, a Titian, Rembrandt, Dogs playing poker, Elvis on velvet.

Oh, the ignominy!

There are few paintings or sculptures that cost under $100 that I find tasteful. Fortunately, the same cannot be said for coins.

And by the way, what makes you think we DON'T collect paintings and sculpture. Although I've never had a taste for sculpture, I have several original paintings and prints in my house that I love.

    It's a JOKE, Shamika.

I got enough oil in my living room to start a Jiffy Lube.

Yeah, maybe. But you don't often see someone buy a wagon load of wheat or a weeks
worth of groceries with a painting or a sculpture. You can't well study the effects of com-
merce on etchinging or the effect of drawings on the market for potatoes. One won't study
modern art looking for subtle varieties or the great classics looking for new die marriages.

To each his own but for me a beautiful coin or medal has the best of both worlds and repre-
sents the highest of human achievement rather than the lowest.

  • Being boorish is an equal oppertunity lender of it`s self. image Not just lending it`s self for collectors. I never cared for paintings or sculptures in terms of collecting. I perfer music as it`s more hard hitting and more universally understood that goes beyond culture barriers. Paintings or sculptures does the same but, not to the degree as music.

I realize that this thread was started tongue-in-cheek. But, I would like to say that labels, whether about politics or this or in any other context, is so old hat. A person is how he or she is generally not because of some label. I know of no one who fits perfectly into a pigeonhole.
