Looks like it ONCE was a mint state coin. Of course every coin was at one point mint state but it looks like that baby took some scrubbing.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Looks like they removed some toning with Brillo.

It's in a NCS holder, PF58 details, wire brushed (whizzed). They are asking $24k for it.

A PF50 that hadn't been tortured would probably look nicer. I wonder a 50 would cost less?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

The 1895 Morgan has been called the King of the Morgan Series, only 880 proofs made. I wouldn't want this one, it would make me cry everytime I saw it.

    This one is much better!!!

Not sure about that. I've been watching this one in the Heritage ANA Signature Auction just to see what it goes for. It's over the $24,000 price tag now. However, I think it looks much better than the one Eric posted.

That ANACS coin is lightly cleaned, and more than acceptable for someone on a budget, if you could call someone who can spend ~30k on a budget. The NCS coin I posted has been brushed, and brushed coins are the worst. I think they are really optimistic on the $24k price tag.

buy it, make it a pocket piece to wear down some of the cleaning and sell it for more money.

  • I can't imagine walking around with a $24,000 dollar pocket piece!

  • Here's a link to an 1895 in MS61 for a fixed price of $39,000. No images, but you can probably get some if you requested them image

  • Well if you can't get it slabbed by PCGS then the coin is pretty much junk bullion as far as I am concerned.Whether you want to cross over and back from one service to another is immaterial.
Cleaned, Whizzed, Scrubbed, dipped proof coins are junk IMHO.
Of course if they want to sell it for $10.00 it would make a nice hole filler or belt buckle.

Now that PCGS PR61 coin ought to be pretty good.

  • Even though thats considered a damaged or tampered with, I would still take it, of course at a much less price. Its an american rarity, its very well still a great coin.
