A Question About the New Nickels. Need Help From the Modern Coin People...Please.

A lady from the bank adjacent to our office stopped by today. She's looking for a set of proof nickels from the US Mint. She says that the Mint is sold out of the sets, but she wants to buy one from a dealer. I have never heard of a US Mint set of Proof Nickels. My question is: what sets did the Mint sell that are now sold out? Where would I find one on the open market? What price?

Thanks, Dennis

To the best of my knowledge (I'm NO expert here!) the only proof nickels offered are in the regular 11-coin sets. Both '04 nickels are included.

unless they snuck something under my radar, the only way to get proofs is in the standard proof set. chances are the lady who stopped in just doesn't know what she's talking about..................or i don't know what i'm talking about. tough choice, but take your pick.

Looks like there is still the option of buying the 11 coin sets on the US Mint Website. $22.95

  • Dennis,

There has been some talk that the mint would offer a special nickel set that would include the different L&C editions in both MS and PR, but I do not think that it has happened yet, and may never happen. I tend to think that the lady is confused.image

P.S. I am looking forward to meeting you at the ANA.

I'll bet she's confused and is referring to the L&C C&C sets. They have two unc nickels (one of each design) among other stuff.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

My guess is she wants the L&C C&C set.

  • There is a nickel set that's supposed to come out in September. I haven't checked the Mint's website real recently, but the last time I looked it was listed in the upcoming products section. image
  • It's still listed. They've also added a nickel coin and die set for release on September 16. image
