I bought this in a deal in Carmel the other day with two other indian cents that were pleasing to me. I normally dont buy Indian cents but these (and especially this one) really jumped out at me. The coin looks even BETTER in person as the mirrors are hard on it, something the picture cannot capture.
I had this on my BST thread but decided tonight that I enjoyed it too much to sell it. I will tuck it away as a single in the collection (it will have to make friends with the half dollars and early gold) Just wanted to share it because it really is something.
My question to you is whether or not you think the toning is natural or artificial and WHY?? I already have an opinion that I will share later...
Dont just say, "the toning is artificial or the toning is natural".... If you do, I will hunt you down and make you eat raw clams....

But seriously, I have seen others around here and elsewhere that had a similar toning/brilliance pattern that I assume to be natural. I have no expertise on the subject--it's just my WAG.

I have a 1883 PCGS PR64RB IH that has the same toning on the obverse and a mirror reverse. I really like the way these IH proofs tone. Sorry I can't take a good picture of the coin, it's one of the coins that's on it's way to Jeremy to take some photo's for me.

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.
And if you needed a 1906 IHC, I've got one!

<< <i>Artificial, because the color hugs the devices. All the exposed field areas are a different color than those tucked away near devices showing evidence the coin has been wiped with something, probably zylol or acetone. >>
I agree, I think. It is very hard to tell from that scan, but the color appears to float a bit, and the dispersion seems unnatural, especially on the reverse, where it consistently covers the devices as noted before.
Best,
