I have every one that has come out over the past year and a half and am beginning to think it is the best magazine for the coin collector out there. I love the articles. Have to admit that I think the coin values in the back are a little high, but it makes my collection larger in value!!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Apparently they are really getting aggressive about marketing it and I was told for example that all the Publix stores have it on their magazine stands and they are trying to get it into Walmart etc.
Certainly it's better than Coin Prices don't you think?

<< <i>Me too. To a point where I'll have 1/4 page ads starting next month. I'm also writing a few things ( shhhh) which I still have to present.

Best magazine format out there I think. If I remember I do recall it being alittle expensive though, but loaded with great grading tips, that was the best part.

As for the price guide, as a reasonable estimate of retail pricing, I find it to be adequate and sometimes behind price moves. Often, when they catch the pricing up, it's fairly drastic. I think that it is as good a price guide as any out there but certainly not as good as a specialist who follows his/her area closely.

<< <i>This pricing guide that evolved from CW Trends is becoming more and more helpful to help price less traveled coins, esp. early bust, better date seated, etc. It's not always overpriced either....but most of the time it is on the high side. One thumbrule to use to come up with a ballpark wholesale price is 60-66% of the price.

That's not accurate wholeale at all with regards to C, D O,CC mint gold, early gold, bust dollars. Depending on the coin, there's a number which are in fact selling at trends or above "wholesale".
A closer rule of thumb so to speak on average coins ( not rare ones) is 75% ( ish)
I don't do type coins so maybe this is what you're referring to?

1) Some of the advertisers prey on unsuspecting newbies
2) The pricing is an OK retail guide, convenient for sellers to cite, but often bearing little resemblance to what is available on the market or what coins actually trade for
3) The analyses I have read about "sleeper coins" go no deeper than original mintages vs. current prices, and never mention survivorship or frequency at shows/auctions.
I wasn't expecting a competitor to the Coin Dealer Newsletter and don't expect to learn nearly as much from the articles as I learn here, but it's worth looking at.

On the other hand - try finding a nice like graded coin and buying at bid/ask from a dealer eh?
heritage values however stands out as the closest thing we've got - still short but way above the rest.

Just bread and butter bust, seated, and barber type.
The Coin Values is far more accurate for draped bust half dimes than CDN. I have an AU58 1803 half dime with UNCish details, that CDN says is worth $4600 in AU and $5900 in MS60. The UNC price is off by a factor of 2X or more. I bought this coin about 18 months ago and pretty much bought it based on CDN + 10% or so. At the time I really didn't know the coin could be worth much more than $6500-$7500. I knew these coins carried a good premium just reading the threads by knowledgeable forum members (thanks guys!) So I jumped at the chance to buy the coin when another buyer passed first at $6000. After looking at what Trends listed the coin for is when I started to figure out it was worth a lot more than I thought. Here's a case where Coin Values really helped out to frame the top end price of the coin. Yes, CDN is a great buying guide at times for great deals...for the buyer.

At this point CoinValues magazine seem to be the better acquisition as it not only better reflects market trends but consistently has as a bonus, well researched and well written articles.
Oh, I like the fact that they include a value for MS67 coins as I don't currently subscribe to anything with those values.

The articles are pretty good and it is remarkable they've done so much in so
short a time. It still has a way to go to catch up with Coinage in the quality and
variety of articles.
