Uncle Jerry's Wierd Peace Nickel Error?

MrSpudMrSpud Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭
Hi,
Me and MrsSpud visited Uncle Jerry last weekend and we ended up looking through some of his Peace Medal Nickels looking for the Doule Dies and other errors. We didn't find any double dies but we came across a wierd one. It has a blotch of something dark on it which is surrounded by a much larger copper colored area. The copper color is very strong close to the blotch and seems to fade as it moves away from the blotch. The coin seems to be fully struck under the dark blotch. Attached are pictures of the coin under different lighting conditions. Any ideas on what this is? Thanks in advance for any replies and thanks for looking.

  • Either it's toning or a sintered planchet. Looks like funky toning.

Sintered planchet or some sort of incomplete drying of the planchet leaving water on it from washing that later toned it perhaps? Kind of a far-out explanation, but theoretically plausible, unless striking causes the planchet to heat to such a temperature that water would vaporize.

Cool ! Looks like a sintered planchet to me also with some type of chemical contamination on top of it. What would turn the copper black ??? image

OK, thanks everybody. It seems like the consensus is that it is probably a sintered planchet. I'm going to call Uncle Jerry tonight and let him know. Only, the first thing he is going to ask me is does this add to the value of the coin. Any idea if one of these has any premium?
    Thanks,

As far as I know I have never seen one sold for any premium. They happen quite often. Most people just keep them as a curiosity. It makes a good example to show and explain how this happens in the planchet processing.image
If you like it keep it ,or you could try listing it on Ebay.
    From the CONECA glossary index:
These planchets were kept too long in the annealing drum. While in the drum, they became coated with a layer of metal dust which the heat then sintered onto the planchet. These are known with partial, single-sided, and double-sided sintering.
