Darkside in slabs

Hi all,

I know the breakdown of the TPG's for US coins as far as who is most conservative and/or best. How does it breakdown for foreign coins? I've heard PCGS is not the leader in this market.....what companies are on the top of the list and for what reasons? Thanks.

    The following is my opinion:

For Canadian coins: 1st ICCS, but they use the 90% red rule for copper
2nd NGC/PCGS NGC has gotten a lot stricker recently

For British coins: 1st NGC, most consistant IMO. Good value for the money @ 12/coin.
2nd PCGS mostly due to cost.

For Ancient and hammered coins: ICG. ICG also is pretty good with British coins.

All others: ANACS/NGC/PCGS/ICG all the same in my limited experience.

The coins I am looking to send in are modern Soviet Union coins.

For Swiss; PCGS remains the top pick. Now, where the heck is my latest submission, Mr. Hall!! image

On Swiss, NGC is far too lax usually. They allow far too many ticks on the shield and Helvetia's lovely visage for the 66 and 67 grade levels for silver. They do a better job on copper.

GMARGULI just sold an NGC MS68 1964(?) 1 franc on eBay for $130+ imageimageimage Repeat after me! That coin is not a 68! Someone is buried....I hope it's no one here. image

PCGS is a 'grinder' on MS Swiss copper! .......P.S. That 1917 1 Rappen better be at least a 67, or I'll have to stop by for a training session.... image

ANACS, ICCS, ICG? No experience with them.
  • Well, I'm going to use my four free submissions on darkside coins but I agree with the other posters that NGC appears to offer a deeper breadth and consistency as far as darkside stuff goes.

I thought that I heard somewhere that ANACS was considered the best all around for foreign...maybe I heard wrong.

Have you seen this coin in person?

  • I'll be the first to admit that I think all of the grading companies overgrade darkside from time to time. But to be honest - I think PCGS does it more often than the others - especially gold. And I don't care which country it comes from.

But on an overall basis - I think NGC comes closest to what I grade the coins. ANACS also does a pretty job. And I think ICG is underated. I have managed to find what I consider several bargains in their slabs.

  • My opinion for Canadian Coins ...
    1. PCGS - better holders, grading that includes eye appeal
    2. ICCS - consistency conststency consistency
    3. ANACS / NGC
  • It really depends on the series and country. In my limited experience with Greek and other European coins, ANACS has been and still is the most consistent and generally tougher grading service, although they recently loosened their standards ,but so did NGC I think. I would be willing to submit to all 5 of them, depending on the type of coin.
