Buying/Selling gold coins on eBay.

This is not a SSP thread, so don't ask me to sell them to you.

I'm going to sell these coins on eBay.
I have 8 1996 1/10 ounce $5 gold coins. All are mint state.
I have 8 freebie grades from PCGS.
The 8 freebies will expire soon.
I don't really have 8 other coins worth sending to PCGS to have graded.
My Question is....

Would you feel more confident bidding on (eBay) a gold coin graded by PCGS vs. a gold coin in just a 2 by 2 flip?
In other words, do you think its worth using my freebies on these coins?
Thanks for your help.
Glenn

They're bullion pieces--if you get anything lower than a 69, you'll get more money raw. I'd find some better coins to send in, or find some people who will pay you to submit their coins through the freebies.

  • I agree with Jeremy...don't waste the grading on bullion coins.
  • Yes, I think it would help. You would still have to pay shipping costs and wait. You would probably get enough extra bids to cover shipping and there is less of a chance of returns so I'd do it unless I had other coins to get certified.
  • You would get more bids on certified coins than raw ones - and without a doubt, get a better return on your dollar. Especially if you've got free grades coming.

Also, can you transfer - sell, free grades. I would be willing to buy some at a discount, assuming I had a big enough time frame to use them.

If they wouldn't make 69s then you're wasting the freebies.

A raw $5 GAE will sell for around $5 over melt value on eBay

A PCGS MS69 will sell for around $5-$10 more, so it's not worth the $14-$15 it would cost to get them graded ($12 + S/H/I back and forth)

    However, because...

    1) You don't have 8 other coins worth sending to PCGS and
    2) You will be selling the $5 GAE's and
    3) You have 8 free submissions

...you might as well submit them. You can recoup some of your $199 membership price. But if you had 8 coins to submit, then I would say no to the GAE's.

But more importantly you get 8 chances in the plastic game.

Because the coins are so small, they have a higher chance of getting a MS70 (since there is less surface area for a problem)

My guess is you'd get $350-$375 for the 8 raw and $400-$425 in PCGS slabs - unless you get one that grades a MS70, and that would sell for $300 or so.

If you have nothing else to grade with the freebies, I'd send them in.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

What Relayer said, and I wouldn't bother sending them in unless you really thought you had a 70 in the bunch.

Toss those up on the BS&T to avoid the Ebay fees. Someone will buy them.

You will get about $5 more per coin if they are in PCGS holders. It is up to you whether it is worth the time and use of the grading coupon. You probably could sell the grading coupon for more than $40.
