Do You "Brown Nose" Dealers Hoping You'll Get A Good Deal On Something?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
Come on admit it!!!! I want to know the right way to brown nose these guys. I heard if I bring them some ice water at a show, I might get on their good side. But they might complain (you know how tired they are) and want bottled water. I could bring them an over-cooked hot dog, but my luck they would be a vegetarian.

So how do YOU suck up to the dealers, hoping to get a better deal. I want to get it right folks. Heh, let's see how fast this thread dies.image

My simple answer: I don't. I'm the one with the money.

Nope... I give them some of my favorite dealers really good deals some times, and they return the favor.

I've had luck with a couple by giving them free computer repair/maintenance consultation. One responded positively to some hot smoked sausage from South Chicago. Most, however, seem immune to flattery without the customary offering of significant cash.

You won't catch me brown nosing anyone for anything. I find it disgusting.

Yes but in this "Hot" market they can get cash anywhere. I think they want some perks to go with the cash. BTW... There isn't gonna be no
brown nose on me or perks from me either.

So what's the point of this thread? I dunnoimage

Actually I did help out Mark Feld. While in SD one day I spent about 5 hours photographing some of his coins and taught him how to edit the pics and even taught him how to use the camera he just bought.

I wouldn't call it brown-nosing. Mark has done alot for many on this Forum and I just wanted to repay the favors he has done. If we have developed a better relationship because of it that's great. I firmly believe that having strong relationships with trust worthy dealers can only be beneficial for not only you but the dealer as well. I can't be at every show and every auction, but he is. Better coins for me, more sales for him.

Wow, what kind of lawyers do you deal with? I know very few that "suck up" maybe if more would they would have a little more humility and my profession wouldn't be so hated.

Most of the ones I know wouldn't waste their time letting you pay them $200 an hour to suck up to them.

Most of them aren't even worth the 200.00 an hour, let alone the 4-500.00 an hour they charge.

I don't have a need to deal with lawyers....... Perhaps you didn't see the humor in my remark? I was just trying to put a little humor in this thread but apparently none was seen by you, or maybe you should learn to use emoticons like I do and you wouldn't feel insulted, (and not be so defensive), if that's the case with you.image

Stman, I have bought a dealer a coke, but I knew him from my area. He eventually did sell me a coin I wanted for a cheaper price, but I dont think I would try it with someone I had never met.
  • Actually, I always buy Laura from Legend a drink or food at a show. I learned its a secret to success with her. When I don't buy her food, she growls at me.

I have no shame in this "kiss up"-but then I value my life image

No, but maybe I'll try out some flattery next time like: "Dude, you working out, because you don't look quite as sloppy fat as you did last week" or "Is your nose getting larger? It's starting to match your ears well."

I personally do not suck-up or brown nose anyone, I,m not so wrapped-up in the hobby that I would find it necessary to denigrate myself for a shot at a coin that may or may not ever come.

This is not to say that I would never help out a dealer should I be in a position to as I would help out anyone should I have the time ahd be in a position to do so.

To answer your question though, I know that Marty brown noses dealers by helping them unload their non-moving inventory by duping uninformed collectors into buying said non-moving inventory. image

    Hey Marty, BITE-YOURSELF!image

I don't really consider it brown-nosing but I have been known to offer to attribute a dealer's bust material searching for pieces I need. This has quite often kept a dealer from being upset when I didn't find anything I wanted after spending a while at his table. It has also resulted in my later being phoned and offered a first look when he got more material in.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
