Nickel 1985-P Doubled Die

How much is a Nickel 1985-P Doubled Die worth? I would like to go to my local dealer to see what he thinks of the coin. I found this in a roll of nickels. Also I found a clipped nickel, what is its value?

I can't find any references to an '85-P DDO in the books or in my notes.
There are undiscovered varieties out there but I believe you'll have to
    get some confirmation on this.

  • Go to a friend dealer or post a pic on here of it. I like the chipped nickels. Nice job.image

I would think so, but not sure, look at the error coin price guides on the net. Even if its only $1-2 hang on to it, they're neat coins.image

  • I will be sure to keep it. I was thinking of maybe selling the doubled die if I could get the dealer to look and get a pic for me.

Odds are that it's machine doubling. But as cladking says, there are still undiscovered varieties. Your best bet would be to show it to someone who knows about such things and see what they say. image

Listen to Richbeat. You might find it surprising but many dealers know nothing about error coins and they can't tell a doubled die from machine doubling. Most dealers are NOT good at identifing errors or varieties.

    Warner,

The clipped nickel values depend on date and amount of clip. About what percentage of the coin is clipped? 10%, 20%, 2%?

The bigger the clip, the more money it is worth. Depending on the date, it could be a $5.00 coin, or a $500.00 coin.
  • about 8-10%.

i have my clipped 1978 nickel. its a cool little thing clipped where the L is almost missing and I is partly missing. if you flip it over the clip goes into AMER a good part. a cool coin even if it aint worth alot. its the first one ive ever seen in the wild.

There have been no reported 1985-P doubled die nickels. Odds are that your coin is the result of die deterioration doubling as it was quite common in the 80's. However, I would be more than happy to attribute your coin for you free of charge if you like. You can click here for information on submitting your coin. A clipped nickel's value will depend on the size of the clip, the date, and the coin's condition. Modern clips are worth around $3.00 in BU.
