Franklin experts opinions needed

I've taken an interest in this 49P, and was set to snipe it, but this morning the bidding went way higher than I was considering. I'm interested in your opinions on potential upgrade. I think if it upgraded to 65FBL, the price is a little high. It's hard to tell from the picture I know, but let me know what you think.

  • Aww, people are paying that kind of money not for the full bell, but for the color. I guess the toning craze is alive and well even for coins other than Morgan dollars. JMHO.

    If tuesdaynightcoins says that

<< <i>1st generation holders are almost always upgradable >>

    and

<< <i>Hard to tell with angle of photo but it is a full bell line. >>

You know it must be true. Maybe search the forums for their name.

PS: I'm not sure I see any rainbow on that coin.
  • Color does not equal rainbow. I see no rainbow on that coin either. But I do see nice color. Also some folks do think the old holders will automatically upgrade. I do not. I have had some old holders bodybag when sent in after breaking them out. I have seen others which would downgrade. It is a toss up and you have to look at the coin in hand to tell what is up with it. I am not nor would I bid on this coin at this price. The risk is too great if you cannot look at the coin in person. image

1st generation holders are almost always upgradable I wasn't even paying attention to that. I was more interested in the picture of the reverse itself.

I did a search a few days ago for tuesdaynightcoins, and nothing came up. They do have an interesting bid history on many of their items. It seems there is a lot of shilling going on. I wouldn't be surprised if the current high bidder on this item is helping with the bids even though there is no evidence.

The coin looks like a strong FBL. That is not uncommon for a 1949. The color is interesting except for that big black spot on Franklin's head. That would keep me from buying the coin.

Dennis, without commenting about the seller (who I don't think I know) or the current price, that dark obverse spot/area on the head is quite disturbing to me. So, too, is the one above the R in DOLLAR on the reverse, though to a lesser extent. I would steer clear of such a coin, unless I were able to view it in person.

    Dennis:

Almost impossible to tell whether this coin would upgrade. I will tell you this - a 1949 in MS66FBL should go for about $650-700, whereas an MS65 would go for less than $100. Now, I would ask myself the question - if this coin was a shoe-in upgrade, what's it still doing in the old holder, unless there are some questions about it and it's better off beckoning to the "what if" aspect of the coin. Personally - if you like the color (which is pretty nice but to me not out of this world) and you like the coin, be ready to pay a premium, but don't pay a premium thinking you'll get it back in a re-grade - I can almost guarantee that it won't upgrade IMHO.

I had a 57 D that looked just like that one, color and all, even in the "OL Rattler" holder. It was a 65 and after regrade it is still a 65, no FBL and I thought it had the lines as well.

That coin used to belong to me. I sold it last month to tuesdaynitecoins on dealer day at the Bessemer, Alabama show. That Franklin had a cool green toning to it and was FBL.

coinguy... Those spots didn't look that bad in hand, they were mainly just toning spots and not into the coins surface.

Frank... you are correct that coin won't upgrade to MS66.

Thanks for the advice. Frank, I like your new icon. My max was 100 on this one and I'm steering clear. I'll be watching to see what it closes at.

  • I can tell you for sure that one of the battling bidders is no schill. Supercarcoins is an expert |Franklin collector that likes toners. He doesn't care what grade the holder bears, so upgrade is not his aim.
