Oh no -- I just started a new Registry Set -- Basic Jeffs NFS

I am officially welcoming myself to the brotherhood of Jefferson Collectors. I actually completed a raw set a year or so ago and toyed with the idea of a Registry Set. In the last couple of weeks I picked up 5 Jeff toners from another Board member and decided to finally pull the trigger and start my Registry Set.

Like my Peace $ the twist with this one is again -- toning. All of the coins are going to be MS64+ and toned.

I saw a bunch of Rellas coins and decided that they needed to be in this set.

And I have several from my album set that I'm going to send into PCGS for grading. So I think I'm off to a good start! Hopefully these will be a little less expensive and easier to find than toned Peace $ image

    Mike,

I remember being able to pick off pretty raw toned Jeffs from some of the local shows we both attend. I've noticed that the pickings are slim these days, but I've always been partial to toned nickels too. This just means that you'll have to be more persistent, and I know you're up to the challenge, so best of luck with your nickel set, and may it keep you from finding a beautifully toned 21S before I do!

  • Those are nice Mike!

    Mike:

Welcome aboard the non-FS Jeff ship. You have a beautiful start there!
    When in doubt, don't.

Not a chance! I've learned to very vigilante in my searches. I have to be in order to do the toned Peace $ set!

As for the nickels. I look at it as a nice deversion. And I think you're right about finding nice raw examples. It shouldn't be an impossible goal. It might take me some time and effort, but you can still find these relatively inexpensively raw and with nice color. I'm not looking for FS so that will make it easier and less expensive. I have another 5-6 in my album set that are going to be submitted to PCGS for grading.

    Thanks for the well wishes.

BTW -- Are you going to Anaheim this Sunday?

Yeah, I'd like to go, probably around 12:30 or so. I know the good coins will be gone by then, but I can still drop by to catch up and socialize.

Mmmm...attractively toned 1938s. Nice pickup there. I, of course, am looking at them with the understanding of how killer they look in person. image

Take some shots of those two at an angle to draw out the rainbow rims more, please. image

Thanks for the biz; I hope you like these as much as I do...as much as I would like to keep them I've finally realized it isn't right to be holding back the best and trying to sell others. Make sure to let me know what you think when you get them in.

A thought/suggestion on the FS/NFS issue: there are a number of dates where Full Step coins are quite common...my advice is don't pass up the right color coin for you just because the piece is in a FS holder or has Full Steps. The most KILLER toned Jeff I have ever seen was a 1943-D in a PCGS MS67FS holder...the dealer who had it was pricing it 100% based on the toning...if it has been a MS66 no steps he would have been asking the same amount for it. I snagged it (on memo only...too much $$$ for me at the time) the night before a show opened just to work on color with my scanner...even the scanner picked up the color quite nicely. I'll dig around and see if I still have any of the images.

If you can get them all matching those top two, it will be quite an impressive set.

  • Looks like you're off to a great start, Michael!

The competition seems to be getting stiffer all the time, but certainly
you can find really nice coins for less than what toned Peace dollars
go for, as well as a more abundant supply. These things just seem to
    come nice! image

Have fun, and please share all the photos!

Rella -- I'm not going to exclude FS, I'm going based on color. If it has great toning and its affordable that's all I need to know. I'm going to try to find some of these raw and have them slabbed myself. I think its one of the few sets of toners where that's still possible. I really think its going to be quite fun to try to "make" as many of these coins as possible. And thanks for the help.

Relayer -- that's exactly the idea. As with the Peace $, I'll always look to upgrade the color. I'm not looking for a top 5 set, just a really pretty set of all toners.

Solid - All of these will be imagined and shared with Board. I believe that there are many of these coins still available waiting in albums to be discovered. So the competition shouldn't be that bad. image

    Thanks

It may show for now, that "playing by the rules" of the non-full-step reg. sets, could be as fun as full steppers.
This'll probably be an "F.S.," a "Fun Set." image

great, just what we need, another collector who'll drive up the already climbing prices!!!image feel free to PM any questions. i'll bite my tongue and give helpful, honest answers. but...............if you cross into the Full Step realm you will be flogged and have your membership revoked!! we won't even discuss what'll happen if you decide to collect proofs.image

    it's a conspiracy, a conspiracy i say..........................
