New Purchase: 1890 PCGS MS-64 PL Morgan Dollar -- Photos

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
My e-Bay win for tonight is an 1890 PCGS MS-64 Prooflike Morgan Dollar... image

This coin has a huge 20x price jump from MS-64 to 65 and an 18x price jump from MS-64 to MS-64 DMPL, so I figured my optimal "Best Value" grade is MS-64 PL image

Here she is:

Is that brown toning or a reflection in the image?

Eric: In answer to your question, I think that it is brown toning. However, since I just purchased the coin tonight via E-Bay, I haven't seen it yet in person to give any more details than what's in the photo.

When I receive the coin I will post an update on how it looks in person.

Thanks for your interest and for your post.

Stuart, Nice looking Morgan. I really love PL Morgans!! They are almost as nice as DMPL and cost less.

I would have bought that one. 1890-P is usually really ugly, seldom PL.

J'har Ron & Dennis: Thanks for your posts and for your comments on my new 1890 PCGS MS-64 Morgan.

Dennis: Hopefully from your mouth to PCGS' Graders' ears, because if this puppy would upgrade to an MS-65 PL her market value would increase probably about an order of magnitude.

When I receive the coin I will post an update to this thread to let you know what I think of it in person. My guess from the photos is that the strike may be a bit weak over Miss Liberty's ear with perhaps a few too many stray contact marks for her to make an MS-65 grade -- but I like the way that you are thinking image

I think that the coin grades very high on eyey appeal, because as Ron mentioned many 1890's are very dull and unattractive. According to Wayne Miller, this is one of the toughest non-key date Morgans to get in Gem quality mint state grade.

Thanks for the helpful and informative posts!!
