I wonder what it is made of?

I was changing out the holder for this Peruvian Proof Pattern 20 New Soles coin and got to wondering what the composition of the metal is.
Anyway, it appears to be a tri-metallic like composition. It weighs 23 grams the rim is two tenths of a inch thick and it is about 1.45 inches in diameter.
It doesn't seem to weigh enough for gold or silver, so I was thinking brass with gold and silver plating. But it does have the interesting gold like center
with a gold outer ring and a silver middle part.
They supposedly minted 100 of these proof patterns for the Peruvian government as a commemerative Olympic issue for 1996.
But they never went into production with this coin.
Thanks

Well, I thought a quick visit to Krause, look this puppy up, share the knowledge...which is absent from Krause.image

Last Peruvian 20 Nuevos Soles they list is from 1992 (2003 edition). I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

  • Sorry I forgot to mention it wasn't in Krause as it was a proff pattern that never went into production.
But they ran off a 100 at the Canadian mint for sample purposes.
So I am sure the 100 were likely given out to various peopl in Peru to decide it they liked it or not.
    Apparently they didn't like it.

  • Well I thought I'd throw a little math at it.
It seems that the weight and size of the coin and it's volume work out to mean it's made of some sort of brass/copper alloy.
Then they gold and silver plated it.
I think if they would have done the center better than just cheaply plating it in a simple circle it may have been a winner.
Hopefully, it might even get into a Krause book one of these days.

Of course that is an interesting trick to do with the gold/silver/gold plating effect on the coin.
