Ever bought a coin and regretted it later?

I was reading MrEureka's post about people thinking that they better buy a coin because another better one was unlikely to turn up anywhere. I was wondering about the flip side of that...how many of you have ever bought a coin, then regretted it? As an example of what I mean, perhaps a better one came on the market and you had funds tied up in a previous purchase and couldn't afford it? Or you bought a great coin only to have it come back bodybagged, etc.?
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

Many times. Here are two that come to mind:

On the upside, I was able to expand my ever growing bodybag collection.

Yes, I have, several times, and I have learned. They were either impulse purchases or online auctions sight-unseen. I have (fortunately) not been badly hurt by any of these, but ultimately, the coins have been sold off. "Mistake" coins are not worth keeping around, IMO.

Most of my regrets are for coins I didn't buy.

I've had a couple that I regretted buying though.

  • I regreted buying a few dogs. It seems so hard to get rid of them, and not loose too much. Also I have regreted buying coins because the price was to high. Love the coins, very PQ but may take years for price to be bearableimage

Yes, every time that I have to talk myself INTO buying a piece. I always find myself regretting the purchase later.
  • Yup, been there and done that, many times.
When you buy a nice coin, another better one always shows up later, but your broke then.
Then when you don't buy that "last" one, it's years before you see another one to get.
Then when you jump on it, more pop up out of the woodwork, better and cheaper than the one you
    just bought.

Done that! It seems that it is not so much the money that got flushed but more the shock to the ego. It brings into question grading ability, understanding of the market for your specialty, inability to resist urges when intuitively knowing better...hummmm. Whoever does not study the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them...how true.

p.s. the only cure is getting a score on a nice coin at a nice price...cures all.

A 52D Washington on ebay that I could have sworn was a PCGS 66 when I hit the buy it now button. Turned out it was a PCGS 65 and not very attractive.

After two years of looking for a 1796 draped bust cent, finally bought one from Doug Bird at a Baltimore show. No more than 3 days later, a better one showed up on ebay with a Buy It Now for $225 less than I paid at the show. I bought the one on ebay too.

This is a trick question, isn't it?

Whoever answers "no" gets reported to the government and gets branded a liar and audited and stuff.

    Right?

Biggest regrets are for coins NOT purchased or ones I sold.image

My regrets are usually towards coins I *didn't* buy. I don't dwell too much on mistaken purchases -- just put them up on eBay and say goodbye.

  • My only real regret was an 1887 proof Indian Head cent in an ACG Proof-65 holder. This was before I joined these boards and realized how sub-standard ACG is. After coming across several more nicer Proof Indian Cents afterwards, I wish I had held out for something nicer. While the one I purchased is definitely not a PR-65, it has nice toning and I paid far less than a PR-65 price for the coin. It may even be AT or altered surfaces. Still, if I decide to crack out and resubmit and try to sell, at least I won't take a big hit.

As a newbie, I was offered some of the most outrageous coins but I had "ALREADY FILLED MY HOLE."

Ah shudda filled mah hole alright.

Bust dimes and half dimes prooflike for $300. Bust gold for less than a grand.

    Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo......snif.

At least I .....did.....buy as many $48-$60 twenties as I could afford.
