Here is the Houcks Panacea counterstamp I mentioned last week that a few asked about pictures on. I have owned it for about 3-4 years now and it is one of my favorites. Especially since I went to school in Baltimore for a similiar profession. Please post pics of other counterstamps. I think they are a interesting aspect of the hobby.

    You learned counterstamping?

Only kidding...I find them interesting also although I only own a couple. The best one is a SPENCER punch on a shield nickel possibly the stamp of the Spencer Civil War rifle maker?

Also did you ever get to read Dave Bowers book "The Strange Career of Dr. Wilkins"..a good read about the Doctors life and his many counterstamped coins. He managed to counterstamp his name on large cents hard times tokens Indian head cents flying eagle cents half dimes also French and Spanish as well as Australian and English coins.

Great coin, and a very popular counterstamp, too, as I understand it. Think I've seen 'em listed in Rulau.

    Thanks fer postin' it. image

Funny I actually thought about a counterstamp or a token if I ever open up my own pharmacy.
Thanks for tip on the book as well - I may have to keep my eye out for that one. The last few years I have purchasesd more books about coins than coins themselves. I like the history behind them. Civil war tokens are especially cool - I have a bunch of pharmacy related ones.

Was there any text associated with that. If so can you direct me to it. Wish mine was in as nice of condition.

    This looks pharmaceutical in nature.

I'd love to find one of those Houck's c/s Bust halves with a tidy hole at the top, to put on my vest. I have a few c/s coins on there, including the Trade dollar. (It is counterstamped, not chopmarked).

  • I found this Lincoln counterstamp in a flea market junk box a few years ago. I think I paid 25¢ or 50¢ for it.

    Nice "about me" page Rob.
You have some cool hobbies. I had a metal detector when I was a kid. My only score other than pennies and beer tabs was finding my moms wedding band which she lost in the yard. Thought about buying one again a few years ago but never did. Maybe I will put it on my christmas list

I think the penny is masonic - but I am not sure. I have a penny with a Moose on it. Always wondered what it meant - if anything. Think I paid a buck for it.
