I forgot I had this...

...I found this 1869-S Seated Half in a box of junk we moved last year; it was separate from the rest of my coins, and now I want to catalog it and assign it a grade. What do you think? What you see on the left side of the obverse was a hair outside the coin holder, and the reverse shot is a bit blurry but the lines in the shield are full and mostly sharp. I'm saying VF-30, but I figured I'd open it to the peanut gallery.

Gee most of my coins are hairlined inside the holder...

I can easily see this VF-35. Actually, I started this thread to help me decide between 30 and 35. I can't really pinpoint one factor which tells me this isn't XF. It just seems to lack the sharpness of XF as I see it in Photograde and the ANA grading standards. But on the plus side, it's very problem-free and has very pleasant, original surfaces. I'm surprised I forgot about this one, because at the time I bought it, it was my biggest buy ever. My dad worked at a major employer where there was a coin show/club meeting once a month. As I recall, I was probably about 13 or 14 when I bought this one for something like $22-$24 as a "VF+" -- a lot of money for a kid who only had an allowance around 1978. I just remember really liking this coin because it looked so problem-free and original.
This is one of those "I'll never sell it" coins even though my current tastes probably mostly go beyond this grade. So even if it is an XF coin, it ain't for sale!
