This is an IFFY JEFFY....

I got a 1977D jeffy nickel today at work that stood out today while cashiering.

1.) this coin has a full steps none are missing and all detail is sharp.
2.) the back jefferson side has a polished look to it and is toned with blue a little orange and some redish purple.
3.) remember a while ago i talked about my quarter that didnt have that top layer of stuff on it. ( like a film) . well this one is missing some in spots. some spots of the coin is missing the final coat . and where its missing the top layer is a dark blue. ( kinda makes it looks ugly but i know it isnt dirt or anything)

this coin has no rim dents or anything spectacular looking FS

what is up with this little nickel

There are no layers to a nickel so the stuff should be toning or gunk.

coin is as smooth as can be so its not gunk ( above the surface.) i assume then this is spotty toning. i thought they always went in a pattern. like halos and all. think this is out of a mint set then since its totally nice and not rim dented like many of the new ones ive seen.

any jefferson people can weigh in

it's kind of hard to give an opinion on the description, a picture would speak, well, a thousand words. nickels aren't "layered" like a clad coin, but they do suffer lamination which could account for what you described---you should be able to easily tell if it's missing metal or tone. the probable explanation for the coin in nice shape with toning as described is that it's been in a paper wrapper for many years and only recently entered circulation. it's a myth that the nicest coins from this era were in Mint Sets.

    post a picture for us.

i was thinking of the lamination. thankyou. but ill have dad do it ( and ill see if he gets to it ) ive been waiting on 4 or 5 items from him). but its a high grading coin. other than the apperance of the spotty toning on the montecello side.

i dont wnat to guess any grade but its nice

A circulated Jefferson that is missing "layers" and that has "spotty toning" in some places is probably not a coin that will grade high.

PLEASE take the time to educate yourself about grading. I am really afraid you are looking before you leap on a a lot of stuff. Is there a coin club in your area? I'd recommend joining, attending and learning.

i dont know how much it was circulated cause all the detail is sharp and looks un circulated condition. ( also i got in my tray for 5 cents so i took no risk

um they may be a little small i dont know if someone can zoom in a little. if you could it would be a big help. but it is Full Step

Looks like a pretty major ding on the cheek. Not sure what happened to that nickel, but I can't see it grading too highly. Remember: even if you can see all the steps, if there is a nick or ding on the steps it is no longer an FS coin.

Probably an AU, bad toning, some hits on the jaw. Full step 1977-D nickels are not unusual.
