PL $1 Calif. gold. How would "you" determine the value?

How does everyone else place a value on such a coin. There are no specific price guides that I know of. Only the redbook "series" price is available. From there I researched the pop figures to determine an approximate mintage figure. Then researched auction prices for similar coins in the past 3 years and estrapolated a value. I came up with a range price of 1700-2000. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Have a Great Day!

There are many many fakes of California gold coins out there. Just from a glance, without looking it up, this one doesn't appear right. I could be wrong, of course.
  • This coin was purchased from Bruce Amspacher in 1983 and has been in my safety-deposit box since. Definitely not a fake.

Granddad, I don't claim to know much about California fractional gold pieces, but I do not think they are especially rare with PL surfaces.
  • It's a genuine piece, attributing as BG-1119. Looks pretty nice.
You'll get a much better price for it if it's slabbed. I see only a few scattered hairlines...nothing that would keep it out of one. Your price estimate is probably accurate.

Interesting coin. Definitely slab it. That you got it from Bruce makes me feel better about its provenance.

Is that a cud at 2 o'clock on the reverse?

    Very nice piece
  • Very nice coin.
Like the others stated, you really need to get it slabbed.
There are a lot of fakes out there, and the slab authenticates it.
I would look and see what different auctions had going for coins like this, that would give you a good idea.

  • That coin got me curious and I found on Ebay this possibly fake example:
    California gold coin

Which led to this one I really thought about bidding on, but I don't want people to think I am legitimizing it because of my bid history. I feel it is fake too.
    Maybe real maybe not
Of course this one leaves you wondering why that area is the area of damage. Seems too much a coincidence to me.
    Maybe a coincidence

Of course looking at all the dollar coins makes one wonder if any of the raw ones outside a "good" slab are legit or not.

That's a genuine non-denominated token. Made by Nathan Joseph between 1906-1920, and is 10-14k gold.

Yes, which is the norm for this variety.
