1995 Olmpiad Cancelled Die

I'm going through my deceased father's coin collection and came across this cancelled die. Can anyone shed any light on this item? How many are out there? Any idea as to value? Thanks!

Fred Weinberg sells a lot of these dies and may be able to help with respect to the number sold. The silver dollar dies often sell retail in the $800-$1200 range, depending on how many were sold by the mint.

Those are cool. Keep it (or sell it).

Nowadays they grind the die down flat.

These don't come up for auction very often on ebay. I have been buying them for the last couple of years at prices from $200 to $800. I even bought one from Fred Weinberg for $600 (I think).

It should come in a black velvet bag and should also have a certificate of authenticity showing when the die was put in service, how many coins struck, why it was removed from service, etc.

If you are interested in selling it, please PM me.

That's pretty cool! I thought the mint totally defaced dies as of around the late 80s or so. I'd buy one from the mint if they wouldn't totally deface it.

I remember when the mint offered those for like $35 or so initially, unfortunately for me- they sold out within hours and I didn't get one image
  • I've placed the die up for sale on eBay.

Wasn't Morris (mnmcoin) looking for one for his shop?
