  • I own about 6 Benson Pedigree coins including a Mercury Dime. Nice coins, but no better than typical coins in grade. I bought them for decent prices and probably only paid a slight markup if any for the Pedigree. I always wanted to own some Pedigreed coins and since Benson coins are all over Ebay at affordable prices, I went ahead and snagged a few.

Many of the ebay "Bensons" come from rolls he collected... that is why there are sooooo many and average for the grade/date

I thought you believed you simply don't pay a premium for the holder, period?

    Oh, and "Benson"?

Slightly overrated show from the 70's.
    Didn't his costar recently pass?

  • Benson was funny on Soap.

The Governor's assistant in the TV show Benson played "Odo" in Star Trek: DS nine.

As for pedigrees, I could care less who owned a coin in the past. The only owner I'm concerned about is me. image

Like I said in that other thread the 19th century stuff was pretty good but the 20th Century material was just ordinary as I recall. The sales were conducted by Goldberg in 2001 and 2002. I thought there was to be a Part 3 but it hasn't happened yet (or I was wrong about there being a Part 3). image

  • Do not pay a premium for Benson coins... while there are some nice ones out there pedigreed to him, they were submitted in rolls to PCGS. I have one Benson in my collection, a 1944-S in MS65. Bought it for a little less than greysheet and it has some nice little flecks of toning around the rims, probally because of being stored in a roll for so many years... image

For the Indian Cents, the "Benson" pedigree is actually Howard Newcomb, the guy who wrote the book on middle date large cents. PCGS has and will change the pedigree to Newcomb if you have a Benson Indian Cent.

  • Many Benson coins, especially the early type coins, seated liberty and barber coins, exhibit very dramatic album toning. These coins are worth a premium for their superior eye appeal, rather than trading for a premium for their pedigree alone. Many of the mid-twentieth century coins are mostly untoned, and/or not special, and shouldn't be valued higher than a comparable coin without a pedigree.

  • Greetings,

I remember the Benson sales. I looked at the coins even before they were slabbed. The lots ranged from common to amazing.

Some of the coins made it into the 2005 Red Book. Specifically, the Capped Bust Dimes pages 128-129.

This is the only Benson coin I own. It is the Large Date example on page 129. This image is on a number of websites.

    Here is my image....

    Benson Dime

    Thanks,

    Kirk

Benson pedigrees are pretty common, but try finding the other half, some time... that "Hedges" pedigree is really tough! image

This PCGS PR63 CAM Barber half I owned has a Benson pedigree.

That's an absolutely wretched picture of it, actually, done on a cheap scanner. In person, it had awesome cameo contrast, particularly on the reverse, that made it look almost like a modern silver round.

Here's my old icon picture of it.

  • I read through your ME thingy! Nice Barber Hedges by the way! Where is the link to your registered stuff? thanks for the humour. I got ripped off on the bensons but who cares! I have dependants that will live long enough to make it up!

i was not at the benson sale, but have been offered numerous benson coins. it's surprising how many of them are flat-out ugly. but your right, a lot of them are truly stunning as well.
