What's the FIRST thing to hit your mind when you look at a favorite coin...poll

It's gotta be sumpin. It's probably even already in your mind before you pull it out of the box or turn to its album page.

WHAT is that first impression?

And I meant "its history" instead of "it's history".......stickler, stickler

I picked history since my favorite coin is a circulated capped bust half-dime that has passed from my grandmom to my mom and then to me. I wonder what things this tiny coin bought and how many times it changed hands on the way to our family.

It's also the only half dime I own which makes it special in my collection. image

I'm not sure where "damn that's a fine looking coin" fits so I said condition.

I chose, "other". My number one priority has always been, 'is it pretty?'
Even a PO01 or an XF40 or an MS67 coin can be highly attractive, or NOT.

I actually agree with Braddick, though I chose "condition" to mean that.

It's kind of the "boing" effect: I look at it: "Gee, that looks really cool." That's the first thing to hit me. I sort out all the other stuff after.

None of the above. I think "I really like this" and I usually notice the design, or luster, or color, or history of it. Maybe how I got it or when I got it.

My answer is color but I have to qualify that by saying that the coin would not be in my collection unless it also cleared a lot of other hurdles.

I can't decide between these two:

<< <i>The story of its acquisition

    What it's worth >>

In the case of my most favorite coin the two are intertwined since I bought it raw and it's worth about 160 times what I have in to it. image

I went with rarity but this includes everything related to its rarity including condition.
Grade is always secondary to historical importance, value, acquisition, etc, but with some
coins rarity is based on the grade.

Few collectors desire items which are common. We usually seek that which is different
and usually in the best grade it can be located.

It's rarity that drives most to collect at all. It may start as simply the desire for complete-
ness, but it always comes down to those last several items which are difficult to find. And
it is rarity that elevates items to our favorites usually. Certainly though some favorites may
have elements that are more important.

I don't see, "How quickly my wife will kill me if she learns about this."

Yeah, yeah, yeah.......Condition an PURDY is the same.

I took "design" as I just can't get excited over a MS70 rainbow toned end roll SBA buck.

I chose condition. To me the coin's overall beauty is what does it for me. I good looking coin can be just about any grade. If it has that "Look" I like it.

I chose "other" because the special coin would probably be holdered so I look to see if it is still in the same shape as I bought it.

I chose history because the one I wanted wasn't listed...."Eye appeal". Condition and eye appeal are not always the same thing. Most of my coins (which is only a few hundred) were bought because they looked great AND for some sort of historical value either personally to me or historical in general. The exception being my Silver Eagles which I bought because just love the design.

I chose "condition", because my first thought is always about eye appeal and the overall attractiveness of the piece. But quickly my brain goes into an automatic process of trying to scheme some way of affording the coin. Such is the way of the middle class collector........

I went with "Other" because #1 is what it looks like

I went with other, because the term I would vote for would be 'eye appeal'

which is a combination of color/strike/luster/marks

I said condition because it has great detail on it. That same coin in lower grade you don't see all that detail.

I chose rarity since for my favorite coins I choose my 19-s and 26-s Lincolns over my 1856 FE and 09-s vdb. The flying eagle has my favorite design, plus the history and price, 09-s vdb has history and price, but I will never again find a 19-s or 26-s as nice as I have for any reasonable amount of money.
