New friends in my collection. British NON-conders

I have a few new friends. They were bought on the cheap very impulsively. I was not looking for coins when I ran across these.

These are crummy scans. They look better in hand than they do in these scans.

Did I do halfway good with these? I just liked 'em and they were cheap!

Any time you can buy new coins, especially on the cheap, it's good

  • I know the medal was minted in 1827 to commemorate the death of (then British PM) George Canning. I know that 2 types were minted, and this is the one that got the death date correct (the other was off by a year I think). I have learned a bunch of fun facts about Canning himself, but other than what I have said I know nothing else about the medal.

Neat. I'd never seen a medal like that.

Death of George Canning, British Historical Medals No. 1300, Br. Rare

BHM in a note to No. 1299 said,

"The inscription on the reverse of this piece refers to the two popular movements supported by Canning; independence for Greece obtained by the Treaty of London, 27th July 1827, and the relieving of Roman Catholics from the disabilities imposed upon them. This latter movement resulted in the Roman Catholic Emancipation Act passed in 1829.

Canning died following a chill caught in Lord Lyndhurst's garden."

  • Thanks Elverno -

I desperately need to expand my collection of reference material. I learned a fun fact last night. Good reference coin books are hard to find in your average bookstore. Did I say hard? I meant impossible (at least so far).

Where did you pull the info for the Canning medal from?
