Speaking of movies in which baseball cards were featured...

I discovered something rather strange tonight. I was thumbing through the 2004 SCD baseball card catalogue and came across a listing for a card I never knew existed: a 1984 Topps "movie prop" card of the actor Michael O' Keefe from the 1985 movie "The Slugger's Wife". (O'Keefe, as you'll recall, played "Danny" in Caddyshack.) In this movie, O'Keefe plays a baseball player named Darryl Palmer and I guess (no, I've never seen the film) there's a scene in which this card is shown. The SCD book shows a photo of the card and it looks just like any '84 Topps card. I don't know how many were made but it lists for only $15. Has anyone ever heard of this card? Or was it auctioned in a Topps Vault sale?

  • I have heard of that card. My guess is that someone involved in the movie, maybe O'Keefe himself, owns the card. I don't recall Topps ever auctioning the card. image

What about all the Roy Hobbs Rookie Cards from the Natural? You know the scene that shows them printing sheets of them.
  • Mr baseball w/ Tom Selleck had a card
    The Natural w/ Robert Redford
Honus (there's more to the title) w/ Matt Modinne recently had a card as well.

they're cool as props as well as a collectible of sorts. I've consided collecting these cards as well.

Mastro about 5 years ago had a couple of cards from a baseball movie, Sinatra and someone else, looked like T206's or E90-1's. They looked pretty cool.

Kevin, was Foxx drunk when he choked on the meat? Was it a Mama Cass type thing, where the food didn't actually kill him, just happened to be there when something else got him?

Did you ever see that episode of the Wonder Years where Kevin and Paul get into a spat over a trade that inculdes a Willie McCovey card.....

    Script....a good read
  • Remember the McGyver episode where RD Anderson goes undercover to break up a dealer scam of selling stolen cards? image
  • Steven Kings Needful Things, has a mint 1956 mantle...best looking card ever!
  • there were baseball cards featured in the Sandlot, i believe.
  • What was the name of that old Cher movie who had that kid with the big freckled melon head?
I beleive he had some 71 T's pinned to a bulletin board. I wanna say he was a big Mets fan. Not for sure.
    Help me out!

  • Didn't that Negro League movie have some.....Bingos All Stars...forget the actual name. Lots of famous black actors in it.
  • I'd pay a buck for a '78 Tanner with a back pose with that Chico's Bail Bonds ad.

I remember the MacGyver episode. He dressed up like a dork that collected cards. He walked into a card shop and on the magazine rack was a Beckett with Jose Canseco on the front. I remember that because I had that Beckett at the time.

Mask was the movie. Pretty sure the cards pictured were much older than 1971 though...

I remember that Wonder Years episode. Good stuff. The Mask featured some 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers cards.

I wonder what Winnie Cooper (or at least her real-life counterpart) looks like nowadays. I always thought she was cute.

Back to the original subject, I think a few cards (I wanna say '58 Topps, as I'm pretty sure there was at least one of the distinctive All-Star cards) were tacked up to a corkboard in Stand By Me, which is one of my all-time favorites.

Regarding the movie "Mask", it was either 1955 or 1956 Topps Brooklyn Dodger cards that he tacked to his wall.

The 1941 "Pride of the Yankees", the Lou Gehrig story, shows some cards in the beginning, but I don't remember what they were as I haven't seen the move since I was 13--over 20 years ago.

There's a Simpson's episode with the following line:

Milhouse: Excuse me. Do you have the Carl Yastrzemski baseball
card from 1973, when he had big sideburns?

Also, back to Wonder Years, there was a scene where Kevin was looking at a 1969 Carl Yastrzemski card.
