1952 proof quarter with Superbird reverse

darktonedarktone Posts: 8,437 ✭✭✭
I was just looking at one of the auction catalogs and they have a variety listed as the Superbird reverse. Someone at the mint punched a mint mark S into the eagles chest! Sounds like a neat variety and I am going to be on the lookout for them. If I understand the description right there is only two known so far. How about somebody that knows more about these chime in with the facts. mike image

There are more than two known. Heritage has two in the upcoming auction, but they aren't the only two.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I myself have handled about 10 of them over the last few years...in PCGS slabs. As far as I know, nobody designates them...although ANACS probably would/will if you asked. It is only truly scarce in high grade PR67+ and even then is not something that would be a lottery winner...maybe a 20% premium or so. I will say it is a neat coin, although I know there is some argument as to if it was intentional or not. The bottom left portion of the S is missing and could have easily been a lint piece that got in the way of the making of the dies.

I have never handled one in designated cameo, although the 52 quarter is pretty scarce anyway...but that would probably pretty scarce.

I own two specimens. One in an NGC 66 cameo holder and the other in a recently purchased proof set. The 's' is clearly visible under magnification.

I am thinking of selling the proof set - no need to have two of these.

There is a page devoted to this variety in Val Webb's cameo book which includes a picture.
