Anyone Know What The Next Coin To Be Added To ANY Of The Lincoln Registry Sets Will Be?

I think the last one was the '09-VDB DD.

Forgive me for not being specific enough. I meant, what will be the next variety/double die, e.g. Perhaps one in the pop report already (22 No D Weak reverse or 36 T2 or T3 DDO or the 98,99,00 Wide AM, etc.) or another not yet in the PCGS pop report but in the ANACS &/or NGC pop report - say, the 1980 DDO or the 1994 DDR, e.g.

Of course if were a trick question, the 1st respone might prove to be right after all as PCGS moves VERY slowly in adding to the composition of the registry sets.

I think it will be the 2005 mint state and proof coins

maybe the 98,99,00 wide AM? They are in the price guide now. If they could figure out the way that anacs and NGC tell the difference, maybe the 1982 copper/zinc and small/large combos?

My question would be how many of you collect these "minor" varieties? And if you do, how many of you would spend the money to have them holdered by PCGS? Steveimage

The 1960,1970-s and 1982 varieties should be in the basic set. It's like including the 1909 but not the 1909 vdb.
  • I would say the 1960 TDO. That is fs-023. They just started attributing them about a year ago. The couple I had were sucked up by registry set holders I presume just in case.

I could be wrong but for the longest time PCGS just lumped all the 1960 L/S & L/L/S (i.e. TDO) Proofs together under the L/S heading. There are undoubtedly still several TDO's (i.e. - FS-023) still in L/S (i.e. FS-025) holders & will remain so unless & until someone sends it in for re-attribution. I do beleive that EITHER ONE will currently be able to be put in the registry set in the L/S slot. image
  • Yes that is true. I still look for the TDO in any holder. When the dust settels the pops. for all three varieties will probly be about the same.

Three or four months ago, there was a report in Coin World that PCGS might move towards identifying 1941 Lincoln Double Dies as Die #1 or Die #2, which the Cherrypicker’s Guide refer to as FS#-018 and FS#-018.1. They did not identify the source of that report.

Right now both varieties are pooled together by PCGS as simply DDO’s. That is, they are not distinguished on the insert of a slabbed coin, nor are they tabulated separately in the pop report.

It’s fair to say that FS#-018.1 has stronger doubling than FS#-018 and is much scarcer. I’d also note that a third 1941 DDO, namely Die #5 or FS-018.3 is recognized by PCGS only under the “mint error” program, and that is readily understandable.

As far as registry sets go, I think either Die #1 or Die #2 should satisfy the 1941 DDO requirement (as is now the case). The important thing in my opinion would be to properly label them on the insert and in the pop report.

This would continue the nice trend at PCGS in separating out distinguishable varieties. image As has been pointed out in this post, a few months ago they started to recognize three categories of doubling for the 1960 Proof Lincoln, making a distinction between FS#-023 from FS#-025 whereas before they had pooled the two. In addition, they began separating 1971S Proof Lincoln DDO's into Die #1 and Die #2, which CPG refers to as FS#-032 and FS#-033.

  • I think the 25S/S has long been overlooked. It's an obvious RPM using the naked eye and is somewhat challenging to find. PCGS doesn't recognize it yet on their holders, though.

25-s/s? Oh my! If 25-s wasn't already tough enough!

    Gerry,

Thanks for teaching me about the '41 DD's. I didn't know that 018 & 018.1 are treated the same by PCGS. I thought only the 018 got in a 41DD slab w/out using the "mint error" service. I appreciate the new knowledge. image
