Can someone help me with the definition of "raw"?

Hi! I've been on this Forum for several years, but still have a lot to learn! Since I "specialize" in filling my and my kids' Whitman folders with circulated coins, a lot of the terminology used on this Forum doesn't apply to my situation.

One which I thought DID apply, however, was "Raw".

I thought it meant "nothing special", or "average out of circulation" vs Proof, etc.

But a lot of the ways I'm seeing the term being used, I'm starting to doubt that assumption. Am I wrong? Can someone please educate me?

raw as in uncertified, as opposed to a coin certified and encapsulated by PCGS, NGC, ANACS...

And then there is raw as in hide that comes from a steer, but you also steer a car, but a car is something you ride in, but you also ride in a bus, and a bus requires a token, which is much like a coin, which can be raw. This terminology stuff is a vicious circle.

To me, Raw means a Mint State coin which is unslabbed by a third party Co. Circulated coins are also Raw, but circulated. Hope this helps.

Raw just means that it isnt certified.
