Christian Gobrecht medals

Back in the middle 60's and early 70's, the Hanover Numismatic Society had medals made for their annual coin show and they featured Christian Gobrecht. Why?? He was born and raised in Hanover, PA. So was I. I was lucky enough to find some of them and have pics here for you to enjoy....Ken

    hey Ken

thanks for the pictures. bring those to Pittsburgh if you can remember, i'd like to give them a look-see. do you know anything about who designed the medals and where they were struck??

  • Nice! I didn't know there were a bunch of them. aem4162 has one as her icon and in her sig but it is not one of those listed. It has David Rittenhouse on the reverse.
Time sure flies when you don't know what you are doing...

  • Keets, I don't know a whole lot about them. I just found out today that there were about 10 different ones made and one year also had a silver one in addition to bronze.
I do know where to probably get the rest to complete a full set though.
I will definitely be bringing them along to the show. They are really a quality medal!

  • DANG....someone else has seen them. i didn't know about others - i went to a club meeting with my aunt and uncle in 1973 or 1974. they had a raffle at the meeting and i won. the medal is beautiful and the relief is like a mile high.

i wrote to the club asking about mine and never got an answer....

now i wish i had the whole set!!!!!!

  • aem4162,

Are you from the Hanover area? I may be able to get a few complete sets together, if there is enough interest, because I know where there is a large stash of them. I will not do it for profit though, just the cost of the medals and postage.

  • my grandfather (mom's dad) lives in hanover, but they were out in brodbecks for years. i was just there in may but didn't have time to find out anything from anyone in the club. i'd love to get as much as possible. are you in hanover?

I have seen the silver version of that medal and it is an awesome strike.Since he was one of the engravers at the U.S.Mint,they thought it only proper.
