GAI grading Star basketball cards

I didn't see any news about this on GAI's website. Who's doing the authenticating?

GAI Jordan

I assume the holders are similar to those used for packs. Hopefully the cards aren't sliding around.

  • I emailed them about this and they are grading star basketball cards. There is a press release somewhere on their site; I think it is in archives or news or something. It takes a little hunting to find.

    ~"Press Release
    Irvine, CA July 2004
Global Authentication announces it has begun grading and authenticating Star Company Basketball product. Global is now accepting Star Company singles, sealed bags and oversized product. Global has entered into a consulting agreement with Steve Taft, of Steve Taft Enterprises in Agoura Hills, Calif., who has been dealing in Star cards since the 1980s and has samples of virtually every reprint and counterfeit Star Co. “This agreement will utilize Steve’s authentication expertise to help identify questionable product and our grading staff will complete the grading process. It’s exciting to offer a service that so many collectors have asked for over the years and to be able to authenticate and grade all Star Company products. It will give a shot in the arm for this segment of the marketplace.” Said Mike Baker President of Grading and Authentication.

Topps discontinued manufacturing basketball cards in 1981-82 and Fleer’s first issue was produced 1986-87, making the Star Company the only company producing basketball cards for three full seasons, 1983-84, 1984-85 and 1985-86. Included in these Star Company sets are the true rookies of Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas, Clyde Drexler, Dominique Wilkins, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing and many more. Star Co. also produced various special issue sets like Gatorade Slam Dunk, Celtics Champs, All-Rookies, etc., that contain various key cards and rookies."~

They hired Taft who used to do the authenticating for SCD. Hopefully this authentication helps the Star Company market and should also help out the SCD graded cards.
  • Cool. It'll be interesting to see how the GAI market compares to SCD.
