Barber dime - nicely toned 1892 MS65

I just received this beauty in the mail. MS65 is not not usually what I collect, but when I see toning like this I have a hard time resisting. Purchase price was within the graysheet bid/ask range. What do you think of the toning? On the reverse, the the grains next to the "E" in "ONE" gives the appearance of a weak strike. This is just a mark on the holder (PCGS).

I love this coin, but my only hesitation about keeping it is reducing funds away from my primary collection goal - a complete circulated dime set in the VF+ (key dates) through AU58.

Too dark and too mottled imo. With less than average eye appeal, these trade for under bid in most cases between dealers. These are slow sellers wholesale unless you discount. Suggest returning it. Wait for a lighter toned one. Not a keeper.

I imagine the coin looks much different in person. I know Tom's taste and it has to have eye appeal for him to like it...

I have similar tastes and tend to gravitate towards deeply toned orig pieces with some nice colors tossed in. Regardless, these are not that popular with most buyers as they do not appreciate the deeper toning hiding the luster. Often-times I have to back away from the "too-toned" specimens for my own good. A number of forum members have helped ween me off the "too-toned" coins that were good sellers in 1989 but have since lost their way. Heck, in 1989 a fully dark brown or almost black coin would still for strong money. Not today. One has to be careful on the too-toned coins and err to the conservative side. Just mho.
