1854 half cent-could it be a proof?

When I first posted this someone mentioned it looked like a proof, in the PCGS site they do list this yrs proof as brown.

What do you all think?

  • Hi there,
youv'e a bit of reading to do. This, whatever it is, is not listed as a "Brown Proof" for that year, assuming that is what you mean. Copper coins can exist in Red, Brown, or Red and Brown.

  • It could be ...

    or maybe not ...

I like the coin either way ..
  • I mean in the price guide it is designated as brown for that yr while others yrs are designated rb.

Just slab it and find out. It's nice enough to slab even if it's not a proof.
  • Hi,
that is exactly what I was afraid you meant. I gently suggest some reading.

    Best to you,

  • Thanks Billy

I will admit I am a newbie, the good thing is I got this coin at a great price and I had bought it before it was suggested that it may be a proof.

Krazyace5, It looks like this coin has a partial wire rim om the lower half of the obverse, suggesting that it might be a proof. You really need to send this one in to PCGS to get graded.

  • Hi Krazyace5,
I wish you good luck. While I don't really like to comment on scans, I will venture to say from the glance I took it looks like you might have a shot at "Pr"! image I wonder what you paid, and what you bought it as. Do let everyone know what the result is.

    Best to you,

It can be very difficult to identify whether a late date half cents is a proof. Many business strikes have prooflike surfaces and are extremely well struck WITH wire rims. 1854 comes in two varieties, one of which is a proof only variety. Unfortunately this is not that variety. I don't know if the other one comes in proof or not. I don't think this one is fully struck up (leaf cluster to the right of the bow looks a little weak) and the edge/rim on the obverse doesnappear squared off so I doubt this is a proof.
