Life just threw me 2 curve balls, gonna have to sell most of my collection

Two days ago, I fell asleep at the wheel on the way home from work and rear-ended a SUV, and totaled my car. Yesterday, on the way to work (borrowing my dad 's car), I fell asleep again, rear-ended another SUV, and totaled my dad 's carimageimage . Very luckily, no one in either SUV got hurt. I got bumps, bruises, and minor cuts. The seatbelt and airbag saved me. I thank God for this; someone could have been killed. Just goes to show, you never know when sh*t will happen to you. I 'm gonna sell most of my collection, stop actively collecting for now, take care of the damages I 've done, and stop and smell the roses more often ( been working myself to death ).
One thing for sure, I will still be chatting with you guys/gals on this board, learning and contributing. Thanks for your time. You guys are great.image

Sorry to hear about your accident and decision to sell your collection. Hope it all works out for the best.
  • I hope things get better for you soon. I just sold a portion of my collection 2 weeks ago, not bucause of some misfortune but a change of priorities. The coin market is currently pretty strong and your coins should bring good prices.

    Good luck.

I've been thinking of selling my key dates lately too. I can't afford to buy much anymore so I'm not having the fun I was.

Something is very wrong with your health for you to fall asleep at the wheel twice in such a short period. I would not hesitate to SEE A DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY! mike

Also I might add you should not be behind a wheel until this problem is solved as you are as dangerous as any drunk driver. I would hate to hear of someone being seriuoly hurt or even killed by this. mike

    First,

Something might be physically wrong if your falling asleep that easily driving. I drive 4000 miles a month usually and get tired, but not enought to go to sleep while driving. I would get it checked out with your physician.
Secondly, one positve note, your selling your collection at a good time into a strong market. Take the time to find the best possible way to sell it off, either major dealer, major auction house, etc.

good luck and hope everything works out!

  • You might want to take a cab to the doctor's office!

PS Hope things turn out well for you.
  • Sorry to hear about your accident.... I hope that everything works out.

P.S. Don't work sooo hard that it ends up killing you or someone else.

    Thanks,

I was thinking the same thing. I hope he gets whatever problem it is resolved. In addition to someone getting hurt or killed, I could see him being charged with a pretty serious crime after the first time, and especially after the second time, if it happened again and there were injuries or death.

Thankfully, he has the opportunity to get whatever it is taken care of before it happens again.

Thank God there were no serious injuries.
Do you have Sleep Apnea? If you do not know, perhaps it's time to get tested?

Sorry to hear about your accidents. Glad to hear that everyone is OK. Not supprised, though. I am married to an ER nurse and know what kind of hours and stress you guys work under. I often worry about the way that she ends up not knowing whether she is coming or going simply from lack of rest.

    FYI

he works in the ER so maybe he has been working too many hours. I am sure that is the problem.

ER, I was in your same club with a rollover at 60 mph back in 1990, caused by too little sleep and too much work. I had on numerous occasions over the years nodded off for a second or less and snapped right back up. But this time, it caught up to me. I don't work the night shifts anymore but I know the tendency is still there if I push work too hard.....or stay up too late on this forum! I drove cross country in 1978 and must have dozed off dozens of times...but woke right up in every instance.

Good luck in your search to make things better. Sleep apnea sounds like a good place to start. Its been mentioned to me a few times and I have yet checked into it.

Good luck with the sale of your collection and likewise with your health issues.

Keep one coin you normally wouldn't sell as a rememberance; it'll also act as the impetus to start collecting again.

Sounds like simple sleep deprivation to me; possibly narcolepsy but you woulda known that by now.

Unfortunately I can't think of a better fate for most SUV's.

This is why I don't drive. Even if I have had plenty of rest I will be asleep at the wheel within 5 miles, ten at the most.
  • I also had a mishap in my car yesterday. Driving down the road to my house a very large tree branch fell straight down and hit my car. The branch was 20 foot long and weighed over 100 pounds. It crushed my roof and smashed out front and rear windows. It nearly went throught the windshield. If it had hit one foot back, it would have gone through the sunroof and done me in. I'm just glad to be alive.

Dang. That Celica looks almost exactly like mine. Except that I don't have a sunroof. Here in Texas we try to keep the sun *away* during the summer months. image

ER, glad to hear you aren't seriously hurt, but please be more careful! God's trying to tell you something!

It can be so easy to fall into a habit of working too much - it's good that you realize you need to make some changes.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Sounds like you need to cut back on the shifts a bit and figure out what's happening. as you said stop and smell the roses. Just make sure nothing else is going on. Hang in there.

  • Unless you have a good reason for being so sleepy (sleep deprivation, etc), ask your doctor to consider checking you for sleep apnea.
It is very common and easily overlooked.

Sleep Apnea is cessation of breathing "during" sleep.

Nice questionare, I answered yes to 14 of the questions but I've often suspected I have sleep apnea.

It leads to bad sleep and excessive daytime drowsiness. Also a big strain on the heart.
