another error fine. 5 cent 1954-S over D mintmark Omm#1 and a question

pretty cool looking had a 1 in 14 chance in finding one it was in a 1/2 roll with some other 51s Jefferson at the bottom of the box. but what a suprise when it showed up......nice and easy to see over mintmark. the cherrypickers' guide says its 5 stars but only worth $40 in MS60 (this one i would guess is around VF, i cant grade nickels). .. o well Ebay will let me know what its worth, i will also put up the other errors i found of 1951-d over S Lincoln... thanks for stoping by David

MY question is how can u tell if its an early die state???

  • Always a nice score!

I have two of these, MS64 and MS65, and both appear to be in about the
    same die-state.

Generally speaking, you can determine die state when you can line up or
document with photos, a number of coins coming from the same die.

You may notice that some examples exhibit die cracks, chips or polish lines
that would obviously be a later die state than examples not showing
    these characteristics or "markers".

Beyond these obvious markers, it comes down to more subtle things
like some examples showing more or less details and evidence of die
    fatigue.

    Good luck with your auction!

An early die state coin will have very sharp outer edges to the outside-most devices on the coin. In this case, the lower edges of USA and the upper edges of EPU. If there is "feathering" of these devices toward the rim, you probably have at least a mid-die state coin.
