Player Set Collectors' Thread

Since the Nolan Ryan Thread has worked so well, even other player collectors are checking in there these days... I thought you guys might like a general player thread where you post card pictures and other stuff about the players you collect! This way, we can all enjoy talking about the players we collect.

I'll start it off with a card of a great former Red Sox player that has been nearly forgotten today... Smoky Joe Wood. He was once said to be better than Walter Johnson before he suffered a dead arm... he made a nice comeback as an outfielder with the Indians thanks to his good friend (and Imndians manager) Tris Speaker.

My favorite Murray is a 1980 O-Pee-Chee BGS 9.5, Im thinking of crossing it over eventually.

I have a tight, well cenetered 1980 OPC Murray going to PSA in 2 weeks - should grade 9 or better (a la BCCG). Keep you eyes peeled, or PM me if you want it.

nice, if I wasnt so crunched for cash Id be buying more raw stuff like in the past. Ive got about 30,000 Murrays waiting to be sifted through for grading.

let me know when you get it back. Always interested in graded Eddie Murray and Will Clark stuff. Some early Darin Erstad too... mainly just 10s for his rookies.

  • I collect Griffey Jr, I am in the process of getting all of his pre-pro and rookie cards graded in 7, 8, 9, 10. I'd say I'm about 50% done with more on the way. Next I may do 1990,91,92.............He only has 6200+ unique cards so maybe by the time I'm 90 I'll be half way thru the listimage

I started my Marino registry and have been going through my 3,000 to 4,000 raw to see what I can get graded. I just picked up a raw 1988 Pro Set test that should grade PSA 8+.

I thought Nolan Ryan guys had it tough to do a player set compared to players like Yaz, Kaline, or even Reggie... but to take on a player set like Griffey, Marino, Ripken or any other player whose career spanned well into the '90s is truly a HUGE undertaking! You guys deserve a lot of credit for taking up the challenge! Good luck!
  • A little more modern, and not really centerpieces of my collection, but curiosity pieces nonetheless.

    1998 Score R/T 1/1 Masterpieces?

Ditto for 1998 Ultra Masterpieces. Showed these to the nice men at the Fleer booth at the Nationals. Other than being profusely apolagetic, they weren't of much help. Not that I expected any help, I just wanted to see their reactions. Priceless.

  • I saw this bad boy on Friday at the Nationals and held off and held off and...caved in on Sunday morning before I hit the road. 1966 Venezuelan Topps Bill Sorrell rookie!

That Fergie rookie seems to be in great shape! Congrats! Mind if I ask how much it set you back? Is that the one David had available for $74? I think that's a great price, if so!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Thanks Marc, I wish it was only $74. I picked it up for $150 from a guy who had the first table near the one entrance in Cleveland, not the BMW side but the other door. He had a decent amount of Venezuelans and some Cuban cards as well. I forgot his name but he's out of Michigan and I was told that he sets up at the Gibraltor shows out there. He also had pages from the albums with cards still glued to them, first time I had ever seen the actual album pages with the spots for each card, similar to the 80's Topps/Panini sticker books, just bigger.

I haven't picked up anything from David in some time, I keep promising myself sometime soon but something else always seems to come up.

The corners on the Fergie are a little soft compared with a few other '66s I have but I could go home without it.

Luis Tiant from the same dealer...

Very nice cards! I noticed the same dealer had a complete set of 64 Venezuelans. He was asking about $6,500 if I remember correctly, which was a bit more than I wanted to spend at the show. It was also the first table I went to, so I couldn't see blowing all my money right off the bat and walking around the rest of the show with my pockets turned inside out. Anybody know if he ever sold it (or what the dealer's name was).

    Bob
  • What day was that? I saw him on Friday and don't remember the '64 set, he might have sold it. Considering the asking price of the 1960 set that marty picked up I would have to assume that $6,500 for a nice looking '64 set would've been a decent asking price. I could have just missed it completely, but I think a '64 would've caught my eye...
  • CON40CON40 Posts: 1,324 ✭✭✭
I can't pass up an opportunity to show off my one of my favorite cards... and since we are on the topic of Venezuelans and I also have a modest player collection of Mr. Mossi I can't think of a better place to post this pic! Enjoy!

    image
  • CON40CON40 Posts: 1,324 ✭✭✭
Wow! That's one wicked Mossi, he's just crooked everywhere. Amazing that not only did he find a mate to marry him but he did so at home plate!

Obviously, he must have been "straight" in the right places! What's the old wives' tale? If you wanna know the "measure" of a man, you just have to look at his ears? image

I saw the '64 set first thing Thursday morning. I did not go to the show on Friday cause I had to get back home Thursday night, so I was never able to go back and drool over the set again (pile of drool might have lowered the price to the point where I could have afforded it).

    jwasserman,
Nice Goodens! Believe it or not, your not the only Gooden collector around, I am also in that club. While my main collections are Gary Carter, Reggie Jackson, Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett I also have ungraded collections of Gooden, Strawberry, Ron Gant, J.R. Richard, Willie McGee and a few others.

If you have a wantlist or trade list please let me know, I'd love to fill some holes in my collection and maybe I could help you with something.
