Need help-New to World Coins

I recentlky purchased a large hoard of US coins and the seller threw in a a few hundred foreign coins. I started going through them trying to see what was there and I came across several that have me stumped.

One appears to be copper, dated 1820, with a pretty worn obverse containing a man's bust. He faces to the right. Along the left side it reads "FERDIN" the a dot then "VII" then something ending in a 'G', dot, then "HISP" dot "REX." To the left of the bust, there appears to be a letter 'J.' To the right of the bust appears a number '8.'

The reverse appears to contain items found in a crest with leaves or a wreath below the rim. Included on the reverse are a lion and I believe 2 castles.

Sorry there is no picture. Can anyone help me with any info on the coin?

Thanks much

  • The ebay pic is a bit blurry but yes, that appears to be the coin. Mine is a 1820. Any idea what it is worth?
  • There are probably 150-200 coins from all over the world. I'll go through a few each day with my son who is a YN and who seems to be more interested in foreign coins.

For most I can figure out the country. Can you suggest the best source we can use to learn about what were are looking at? Thanks.
  • The best general reference is the Standard Catalog of World Coins by Krause and can often be found at the library as well as at half.com, ebay.com and other sites. Warning: It may be highly addictive to a YN! image
