POP TOP 15/0!!!! image I had those two coins going MS66CAM. I've just discovered that PCGS is not as tough on these as they are SMS Kennedys.

Here are the coins from the submission:

line 1
image

line 2
image

Both of the nickels were pulled from sets I bought on eBay. After replacing them and selling the sets, my cost is about $2 each before grading. Nice little return.

line3
image

That one was cracked out of an NGC MS67CAM holder. I had it going MS67CAM again. At MS66CAM, I lost my butt.

line4
image

Cracked out of a PCGS MS67CAM holder, and came back the same grade. Very close to DCAM. Bought it way below market, so no loss there.

line 5
image

line6
image

Both line five and six are a bit light on the reverse, but I was hoping they might slide in to cameo holders. I had them both grading MS67.

line 7
image

Pulled line seven from a group of three sets I picked off for $41. I had it grading MS66DCAM. PCGS will see it again someday when they get real.

Some hits and some misses, but overall quite a nice submission.

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Those is some nice looking coins. But I noticed you put mint state and that they came out deep cameo, is it possible for mint state to also be cameo?

I have to admit, I wouldn't have picked the Jeffersons as DC either. The frost on the obverses just don't look strong enough.

    Nice job!

SMS coins are mint state whether brilliant, cameo or deep cameo.

Russ, as with Marty's talents, I am also in awe of your talents in obtaining cameo coins. Pictures of same that you post are amazing (or at least the coins are). As an alternative to the regularly used Kudo of "You Suck", I say "Simply Outstanding".

    I don't. You suck! image

  • Yeah.... you suck... I've bought 4 sets that had prospects... but got them out... and of the 4 sets, 1 will pay for itself plus a profit, which will pay for the second set that didn't pan out. Set #3 will probally barely pay for itself, if I'm lucky, after slabbing, and the 3rd is being slabbed, but will pretty much be a complete loss... image I haven't had too much luck searching proof sets... image

    Russ,
Congratulations!image Or Simply Outstanding!imageimage Or You Suck!imageimageimage While the nickels don't have any silver in them so they never look quite as nice as the halves, I think your grades for the nickels were closer to the usual PCGS grades for SMS nickels. Particularly for the first one. The mirrors on the reverse don't look deep enough. And I might say the same for your line 7 halfimage

On the other hand, maybe I should submit my 1967 nickels that PCGS graded 67Cam (and I thought should be dcam). Maybe they would do better now. However, since you've already increased the pop of 1967 nickels in 67dcam, maybe I can afford to buy oneimage
  • Congrats Russ. Nice job on the nickels. Line 7 does look awefully close. I see a bit of haze. Is that on the coin or in the image? If on the coin, you may want to hit the coin with a quick ammonia bath. Rinse VERY well when finished.

    hey Russ

it's certainly hard to judge from pictures, but it's not above PCGS to grade "gifts" every once in awhile. i still haven't been able to nail down an SMS DCAM Jefferson through a submission and they are especially tough on 1967's. the coins you show certainly look well frosted. do the mirrors exhibit that halo quality to the portrait, they seem a bit hazed?? i think Carl's question regarding the steps is an important one. my SMS experience tells me that an MS67 coin should be fairly close to Full Step.

finally, on the top coin, what's that funny looking area above the first pillar? good score.

    MS68,

It's not haze, it's mint frost. It's pretty common on the SMS halves, and is likely what kept the coin from getting in to a DCAM holder. PCGS likes smooth, glassy, uninterrupted mirrors on these. A little less of it in the reverse fields and I think that one would have made it.

I am definitely no expert, but I think the last two 1967 SMS Jeffersons in 67 Dcam went for about $900 each on Teletrade. Not that I need to comment for Russ. Just putting my 2 cents in.

    stephunter,

I should have checked the cert numbers. The sales were actually the same coin; sold the first time at $1300 and the second time at $900.

A big old, Johnny hasn't been around lately you SUCK, to Russ ... He was just living for the day he made a DCAM Jeff to shut me up about the DCAM SMS JFK I made. And, he had to grind it in to boot, with a second. Congrats Russ, those are tough buggers to make ... tougher than a JFK, IMHO! image
