Am I just being paranoid?

You know those numbered holograms Topps puts on the back of their autographed cards ... can they be detected with some sort of metal detector while the box it still unopened? I swear, I've gone through 40+ boxes (mostly jumbos, from a variety of sources) of 2002 Topps football (mainly looking for ROH autos), and have yet to get a single auto card of any sort. Am I just being paranoid (and having trouble beating the odds), or can these things be searched? I ask because I remember the whole Lombardi hologram issue from the early 90s, and was wondering if the same thing could be going on here ...

It always seems that the pack searchers are one step ahead of the manufacturers...jay

Isn't there foil on every card anyway? (Please note I have never used a metal detector nor do I know if they detect foil or not so if it is an ignorant reply I apologize)

  • The old wax and plastic packs you could detect hologram cards with a "stud finder" That is why the companies use foil packs now...

When I was a kid (12-15) i used the stud finder to find Marvel Universe Hologram cards...
  • They cannot detect those cards from an unopened or opened box. Every pack is foil and sets the stud finder off everytime. Hope this answers your question...
  • Cool - thanks for the info. As I suspected, I'm just being paranoid image
