Ever dip a coin and have it go up a grade?

I had a stone mtn commem that I could tell was intensely lusterous and iredesent under the ugly toning. I dipped the sucker and low and behold that coin really came alive. It was one of the most gorgeous and lusterous stone mtns that I have ever seen.
Seeing what was under the toning was a real lesson for me.

No, because I have never dipped a coin.

I didn't dipped, nor did I ever own the coin, but there is a certain Barber quarter, that I've heard (from multiple sources) at one time was unatttractively toned in a a top tier slab graded MS65, and now after a dip resides in another top tier slab graded MS68. I have seen the later in person, and the coin is quite amazing- strike, luster, etc.

Now you know why coins are dipped.

Dipping is a major no-no, but it can actually improve a coin on a rare occasion.

I have found that all untoned proofs fair better with a quick dip before being certified by the TPGs. Otherwise the sonic sealing process can cause ugly hazing.

Bought a 1906 quarter eagle raw as MS-60. Had copper spots on the eagle. Dipped it. Spots gone. 64 at NGC.

Assuming the story is true (and again I've heard it from multiple sources over the years), it is quite a jump. I did not see the coin when it said to be toned. I have see the bright white one, and it is an amazing coin.
