This coin has some great toning but are they stretching it 2-3 points? mike

I'd have to see the coin in person since Heritage's pictures are not very telling. However, I don't see any reason why the coin isn't at least 66.

      How about the reverse?

Geez, observing the many marks, I don't see why the coin deserves more than a 65, and that seems to be streching it.

Looks like the graders gave that one a large grading bump for color. I bet it is awesome in hand.

It's MS-63. Way too many marks even for 65.

Keep in mind guys, this is a fairly large coin, we can't tell what the luster looks like, and we're only seeing one side. And again, Heritage doesn't take the most flattering photos.

Is this an NGC coin or PCGS?

Please be fair guys - those are very small marks, even on a GIANT image. If you were to feel the same way after having viewed the coin in person (without using a 20x glass), that would be a different story. image

PS - I do not own the coin or know who does.

darktone...do you have a link to the auction? I'd like to see the other side.

As coinguy said, you have to remember that the image here is greatly magnified. Those little tics in the right field...I can deal with those on a 67 half, I think, depending on how significant they are with the coin in hand. The calf's belly seems a little chattery. I know this is a problem area for this issue. I'm not sure if they're contact marks, or a slightly weak strike here giving a rougher appearance.

I guess I'm saying that upon further review, I wouldn't rule this out as a 67 based on what I've seen. It looks really nice.

      Many thanks, onlyroosies!

1938 50C New Rochelle MS67 PCGS. Absolutely splendid rainbow iridescence blankets the obverse of this well struck, dynamically lustrous Superb Gem. The reverse shows similar coloration close to the peripheries, with flashy brilliance near the centers. There are a few wispy contact marks on each side, but most are quite well hidden by the deep toning. None have been graded any higher, by PCGS. Population: 15 in 67, 0 finer (3/04).

I still don't know. I guess I'd have to see it in person.

If it were in a 66 holder, would anyone be saying "Damn...that's a sure-shot upgrade!" Maybe.

Be interesting to see in person. Also be interesting to see what this baby goes for.
