Coin scanning help...

Well...I got a new scanner today with hopes of being able to scan some of my coins. I tried one and the scans are horrible! Not sure how to improve them. The scanner was advertised as 1200 x 2400 dpi, but the only options I can find are 300 and 600 dpi. The scans look like they are about 5 dpi! I did read most of the documentation out of frustration, but found no help. Any ideas/suggestions?
