Hey all,

This is coin #2 in my Capped Bust Half Dime addiction. I'm thinking VF20. Let me know what you think as far as grade and general opinions? The pics are kinda blurry but it's the best I could do tonight with the camera I have. Thanks image

  • I'm not qualified to give an opinion, sorry. But if you are a half-cent addict maybe you can give me yours - I just bought this and laid it out in this post

    Cheers!link
  • Looks VF to me... also appears to be an LM-12, an R-4 coin... image

Looks like a strong VF to me- the toning looks a little streaky to me on the reverse, but otherwise looks like an attractive example.... image

Looks to be a fairly nice VF. The mushy obverse is just one of the drawbacks to LM-12. Both dies were basically worn out. It was the third different marriage for the obverse and the eighthimage different time the reverse die was used. Both dies were finally retired after creating this variety.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I like it. Nice even wear and color.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

  • Actually, they are pretty easy to grade, they are just like grading Bust Halves, just on a smaller scale... I also hesitate to call this a "Strong VF" as there is still quite a bit of wear. I tend to lean towards a Mid-Range VF, VF25 or VF30... though part of the obverse may just be from a weaker strike, especially judging by the wear on the eagles wings...

That might be just a bit of an oversimplification, especially considering the strike differences between a large coin like a half and a tiny coin like a half dime.

Heck, I even find that not all Bust Halves can be graded like Bust Halves are 'supposed' to be graded. The same thing goes with all the other bust series, as well. My main pet peeve is the fascination with LIBERTY in the headband -- a tool that is worth less, if not worthless, than many other factors.
  • Looks close to VF to me, nice coin, glad to see your keeping the collecting going.image
