Scanning Proof Coins - Suggestions?

Hi All,
I posted images of the 4 coins that comprise my little Proof Dime Type set ( http://www.pcgs.com/new_set_registry/display_coins.chtml?regsetid=22866&alltime=no .....could someone please tell me how to make a "proper" link?). Thanks to all for the nice comments about my little set. Anyway, I am not that satisfied with the images - I would like to show the mirrors and colors to advantage. The coins are a lot nicer in person, especially the Seated Proof 10c - a lot of irridescence in the deep purple..green, blue etc.. The most accurate at the moment is the Winged Liberty Proof 10c - those are rather accurate colors. I would like to get the colors on the Barber Proof 10c reverse to show - it is really pretty. I figure you guys will have some suggestions before I start experimenting (perhaps tilting the slabs a bit with a coin on the flatbed during the scan etc..). I have an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo Scanner, and am used to scanning autographs, photographs and vintage Kodachrome slides. Any and all advice welcome and appreciated!

Best to ALL,
Billyimage

I can only relate my experience with scanners. I had an old Umax scanner that worked great for proofs - especially cameos. It had a fluorescent tube as a light source. After several years, I decided to replace it because it was slow and had low resolution.

I replaced it with a $100 Canon scanner with LED's as the light source. It scanned cameos terribly, so I exchanged it for another Canon with a tube as a light source. It works great.

  • Tilting the coin by placing something under one end of the slab helped catch colors for me back when I was using a scanner. I also had some luck trying putting black construction paper behind the slab. I could never get the look I wanted to I moved to a digital camera. I bought a used last generation camera cheaply on eBay. It was OK for a year, but I wanted more. So I bought an end of life refurbished camera last year (a Nikon CoolPix 4500) on eBay for a little more, but still not terribly expensive. It is pretty good for now. It could be much better if I could understand how to adjust all those things I am able to adjust image
