(link) It sold for about $63,000 less than its PCGS counterpart. I saw the PCGS 1899 in person but never saw this one. It hasn't reappeared at auction since then, in any holder.

<< <i>Mgoodm3 - Heritage's "fin de siecle" reference sure makes it sound MS68 -- until you translate it to "end of the century". >>
Too funny!!
I remember hearing that PT Barnum had a tent full of different sideshows that you had to pay admission to enter. One of the sideshows had a fancy latin word that translated into the word "exit". When people entered thru that curtain they ended up on the outside of the tent.

I never understood the bidding on the 1899 PCGS 68R. It was a decent coin but, in my mind, it was a nice 67R coin worth about $12K. I guess the registry effect is alive and well?? Since Epstein bought it back after selling his collection in 1995 (for 12.5K) and he clearly knew coins, it must have had a special appeal that escapes me.
He owned a 'museum' in NY, to keep people moving throughout the museum there were signs saying "This way to egress". Those people who were fooled into thinking that the 'egress' must be the most important display as it was the only one "advertised" around every corner, so headed to that first, were surely disappointed when they found themselves back on the street outside the museum, having to pay 25c to get back in when they learned egress means exit.
It's quite similar to buying dehydrated water. I'd really like to know how much money that guy's made.
Sorry for the OT.
Need more $$$ for coins?
