1993 Finest Box Bust (Again... SNAFU)

Last week I picked up an unopened '93 Finest box hoping (and praying) for a Ryan refractor... here are the results:

Box Topper: Nolan Ryan!

Stars/Hofers: Nolan Ryan (2), Ozzie Smith (2), Mattingly, Yount, Molitor (2), Eckersely, Fisk, Ripken, Randy Johnson, Winfield, Sandberg (2), Eddie Murray

Refractor: Drum roll please...

I thought the Ryan box topper was a good sign, but alas, that was as good as it gets... however, I plan to grade some of these out and should come close to break even on the box... it was fun while it lasted!

    Sorry you didn't get a nice refractor. I guess it could have been worse.

    Just out of curiousity, what are boxes going for these days? How many packs are in a box?
  • Keith,

    You should know better, unless you buy an unopened wax case of that stuff, you don't have a shot. These guys know what boxes in a case have the best chances of the good cards, they search those and sell the rest. The chances of you pulling one of these from a box are slim and none.

    Scot;
    Ha! In my case, not even slim, just none! I will grade one Ryan, the Ripken, maybe the Refractor and I'll sell the Ryan box topper (I have one already) and all the stars to player collectors and hopefully, I'll make $150+ back (unless the Ryan gets a 10, then maybe a bit more)... it was a longshot, but at less than 10% the price of a Ryan Refractor in PSA 9, it was a fun way to blow a few bucks.

    gemint;
    The box cost me $300... it has 18 packs in it with 6 cards per pack... and one box topper... refractors are seeded 1-2 per box. I paid about $17 a pack and they can be found at shows for about $20-25 a pack so I think I did ok.

    Conforti - how can you tell if the box is indeed "factory sealed"? I've considered buying one, but I've never been sure if it's just a box that's a compilation of packs with the refractor gone. Is there some sort of factory sealing proof with those?

    Unlike today's boxes that are sealed with adhesive, the Finest box is just shrinkwrapped... so, your concern crossed my mind, but the eBay seller (xgamingx) had lots of 90s unopened for auction with huge positive feedback numbers, so I felt safe in this transaction... but I bet there are some scammers out there selling picked through boxes.
